"I am a father of eight and I got an accident five years ago when I was working with Petro city petrol station in Mombasa. On January 2017 a container slides from one of the lorries and fell on my left leg. I lost consciousness and was rushed to the hospital. My leg was amputated and my lifestyle changed forever. Later on 2020, I suffered a stroke that made me unable to walk completely. I am always indoors. The accident and stroke affected my work. I only depend on my son who works as a teacher. My wife Zawadi is mentally challenged and she cannot even take care of me. I get assistance from the neighbours in terms of dressing and washing my body. Being an ability to stand on my own and walk is the challenge I am currently facing."

"I spent $480 on purchasing a second-hand motorcycle. I had discussed with my spouse investing in an income-generating business. My spouse used to do casual jobs and the amount of money he would get was so small that he could not provide all the basic needs. We had always wished to start a business but there was no capital. I had no steady source of income either, I am doing small horticulture farming where by I plant maize and beans and this is majorly for consumption. Currently, my spouse operates a motorcycle taxi business, which has been our primary source of income. The daily income from this business is an average of $4 per day. we are able to meet all the basic needs of the family and even save some money for other investments. We are so grateful because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards to be much better than before. The remaining amount of money I spent on clothes, food and household items that we were lacking."

"This year we didn't harvest anything from our farm and this has brought about lack of food in our household which is a challenge we're currently facing. We only manage to have a single full meal a day, thus, supper. We use the money we are paid from our casual labour in Demeta, a company that deals in farm produce which is stationed in this area, to buy food, thus a bucket of maize at 2.5$. This happens once or twice a week for it is next to impossible to secure a piece work there nowadays as the demand is high by the locals."

"Currently there's only one thing affecting me and it's none other than hunger. My household needs 30 bags of maize for food yearly for our survival. As I am talking to you, I don't have a single grain of maize because I didn't harvest anything this year. We've resorted to boiling and eating mangoes lately. However, on good days my husband Papias brings home some money from his houses construction business, mostly it's 5$ which we use to buy 2 bucket of maize at 2.5$ each. This food lasts for a week."

"I have a number of challenges that my life harder. My deteriorating health renders me helpless and unable to provide for my grandchild's, Brandina Mpira, needs whom I stay with. I suffer from joint pains and sometimes general body pains and this affects my productivity. This is the only challenge I am currently facing. In turn, I have low food stock levels since I don't harvest as much from my maize field. For instance, I only got 2 bags of maize from my previous harvest."
