"Despite the significant financial demands of the ongoing projects in my household, I am grateful to GiveDirectly for the consistent support that has increased my confidence in planning ahead. I am currently building a new house that is still lacking doors and final furnishings. On the other hand, I am also paying primary school fees for my four children and hope to enroll our youngest son in nursery school classes this year. In addition, I am looking forward to generating additional income by restarting the fish business that I was operating before my stock ran out. I will be able to pay my four children's school fees and buy food for the entire family of eight with the proceeds from the business."

"My objectives for this year include starting a new business so that I can use the money I make to take care of my basic needs and then those of my entire family. Since most of the shops back in the village are rather far from our house, I was hoping to start up a kiosk and sell a variety of goods. Additionally, I hoped to build a much larger home for myself and renovate the roof because when it rains, the house usually ends up being completely soaked."

"I am planning to start up a small business supplying maize to boarding schools. I usually do it although to homesteads on order. In the near future, I will be expanding and mostly the deliveries will be done by the motorcyclist as they will be in large quantities. The profits from the business will be taking care of my kids' school fees."

"I plan to invest in a small-scale business where I will open a mini-shop for income generation. I currently hawk liquid soap to provide food for my family. On a good day, I can earn $2 in profits which is never enough to cater to my family’s basic needs. Beginning this February, I will save at least $5 per month of my transfers to help me start and grow the business."

"I enrolled my wife into a college to persue a tailoring course so that she can gain some useful skills and also engage herself. She is required to pay a sum of Ksh.15,500 and I have so far paid ksh. 2000 only. My objective is now to use the monthly transfer to clear this fee so as to allow her complete her course."

"I have been paying fees for my son through the transfer since last year and I'm glad that he completed his college studies, courtesy of GiveDirectly. I am now planning to buy 10 pieces of iron sheets, building poles and timber in order to rebuild my living house's roof. It was blown away and destroyed by strong winds and I couldn't readily renovate it because the transfer went to fees only. I will be purchasing 4 iron sheets every month to facilitate this. Once I am done with renovating the roof, I will save some money and buy some goats, I'm currently owning two. These are assets that I can also rely on in case of a financial need since they will reproduce and increase in number."

"I was extremely happy to receive this send transfer because I knew that finally I would use it on several projects. Before, I used to live in a mud-floor house. It was very dusty and so uncomfortable too clean. It always felt so cold at night and I couldn't sleep comfortably. I spent $39 on 6 bags of cement and $6 on 7 wheelbarrows of sand. I then paid $37 for labour and the floor of my house was well cemented. My beddings were also in a sorry state, I had been sleeping on a traditional rope bed and a very old and dirty mattress that never gave me the comfort of sleep. So I took $45 and bought a mattress, then took $55 and bought a strong bed. Thanks to Give Directly, my nights are peaceful, comfortable and short. Actually, you should come and see how my whole house has transformed into a beautiful heaven. I also used $200 to pay college fees for my son who is pursuing an electrical engineering course. Before these transfers, I would do casual jobs and also depend on well wishers for his education. I hope that my son will be able to help me financially after he finishes his studies and get employment. Thank you so much for lifting this burden. I also spent $80 on re stocking my fish business which had collapsed earlier. Right now I'm happy and grateful because my business has picked up. I then spend $36 on small other things like food and farming. 3600 farming."

"The beginning of the year was not quite great for me and my family, and this is because, due to the really heavy rainfall one of the walls of my house unfortunately collapsed because the foundation was not that great and also because it's a mud house. My intention with the money that I will receive this year is to ensure that me and my husband can come together to finally feel like we have a better home for ourselves and that we don't have to worry about it collapsing anymore. I will preferably want to buy bricks this time around so that we can have a more permanent home with a better foundation. I also plan on using the money to provide nourishment for my family."

"Previously I had a muddy grass thatched kitchen that was not so strong and I feared that some day it will be blown away by strong wind. With the second transfer, I spend $300 to build a kitchen that is a bit more permanent. I spend the balance to buy a dairy cow that I had desired to own for quite a long time. Early next year, my cow will have given birth and I will be getting enough milk for the family and some for sell. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for the financial support."

"My goal this year was to expand my business and buy another dairy cow. Achieving this means this means that I will earn more income and therefore I will be able to work on more family projects and open more businesses."
