Charlotte
received a $440 initial payment.
"The main distinction, which I can confirm, was that, before the transfer, going to bed hungry was practically the norm. Even two days a week I used to go without food, but after the transfer, my song of hunger altered. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for their assistance. I haven't gone without food as I used to since I got the first transfer. Additionally, as a result of the savings I made to purchase a piece of land, I am assured of respect from the people around me who used to see me as a burden to my aged parents. If GiveDirectly hadn't existed, none of these things would have been possible."

Dogo
received a $440 initial payment.
"When I withdrew the money, I prioritized the construction of a house. I bought the building materials and their prices had been hicked after the suppliers knew that we received money from GiveDirectly. Therefore, I bought building poles for $100, 17 iron sheets for $150, and nails and ridges for $60. In the construction process, I spent $120 on the contractor. Currently, I am a happy woman sleeping in a nice secure house. The fear I had due to the state of the initial house is no longer there, courtesy of GiveDirectly. After that, I opted to use the remaining amount for the family's upkeep since getting some food has been a challenge due to poverty."

"The challenges that I am currently facing are all money related challenges. I have children who are working yes but they have great we responsibility of taking care of their families among other needs. This has often left me and my ageing wife helpless and yet we can do very little to raise income at our old age. There are projects that I have always wanted to accomplish and which requires money but getting this money has always proven to be tough for us. All these projects have had to stall until such a time that we will get some money."

"The greatest challenge that we are currently facing as a family is lack of enough money to adequately meet all our family's needs. We have not been able to raise enough money to pay school fees and to buy food for our family. Despite my husband having to stay away from family in order to make extra cash and despite the fact that we have made some harvests from our farms. All these have not enabled us to meet all our needs adequately. We for example have one of our children who recently completed his secondary school education recently but has not been able to join any tertiary institution due to lack of money to pay his school fees. We have other four children in various secondary schools who all look up to us. We can only hope that things will get better with time and that we will have better living standards as a family once we receive the transfer from GiveDirectly."

"The challenges that we are currently facing as a family are quite many. It has been tough relying on odd casual jobs to make ends meet. The situation have even been worse with the current weather conditions. Following the recent few days of scorching sun, it has been hard to even get those casual jobs. The subsistence agriculture that we rely on have also not been so profitable. This is largely because of the small acreages of land that we till. This situation left us to rely entirely on my husband who does motorcycle taxi to earn a living. The motorcycle that he uses was bought on credit terms and we had huge balances to clear. My husband could not afford to pay off the debts and at the same time buy us basic household needs. The situation that even got out of hand and we had to finally let go of our one dairy cow that helped us feed the family. This was one of the lowest and challenging moments in our lives. We can only look forward to getting some money and buying at least one dairy cow."

"The challenges i am currently facing are first of all school fees, getting school fees for myself and my other 2 siblings are a big problem, it is by God's mercy that my 5 maternal aunties contribute to rise 40 dollars for my school fees per term and 13 dollars for each of my sisters since our mother is mentally hill and our father doesn't care about us for the last many years ago.
The other challenge i am facing is hunger, since i am now the brend winner of the home and i don't work, the fact thst i am a student,we sometimes sleep without food.If we don't find food in the garden then we go to school on empty stomach. Our father doesn't care about us at all,he married another woman and that's where he lives he barely comes to check us. Even as I speak now,I have no idea on what we are going to eat for dinner."

Kenga
received a $28 second payment.
"We have been experiencing a severe famine, which has caused us to focus on looking for food. Even though with the transfer, it has been easier for me to take my children to school, there are moments when I feel uncomfortable sending the small amount of money I receive for fee payment when there is no food in the house. As a result, I set a goal at the start of this year to prioritize using some of my transfer to buy food. Since I am unemployed, I always find it difficult to provide for my family. I will also direct some of it toward raising livestock. Because I have children, the flock will come in handy if I ever need extra cash for an urgent need."

"The main challenge we are facing is that we live in a house which is not finished as you can see, the kitchen has a no roof we are obliged to cook in one room of the house because we can't cook in the kitchen mostly when it rains, it is impossible. The other challenge is that we don't have our own cow, the one we have is for others and we have no right to it for example we can't sell it when we need money."

"I currently face a challenge of poverty which let us live bad life in the way that we at times have only two meals a day and also getting school fees for school going children becomes very hard because landslides and flash floods destroyed coffee plantations which could give us good harvest that earn us high incomes to cater for everything."
