How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
This year, and in the years to come, my wish is to continue farming and to open a business, as these are the most viable economic activities in my area. Doing so will help my family and me meet our daily needs more comfortably, especially for food and school fees. I plan to sell the surplus produce from the farm I planted with the last transfer from GiveDirectly. The income generated from this will not only ensure the continuation of my farming activities but also help me open a business. Fulfilling these goals will bring a lot of joy and gratitude to GiveDirectly, where all this started.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What really impressed me about GiveDirectly is their commitment to helping people directly. Since receiving their assistance, our standard of living has improved, and I am able to send my kid to school. This will definitely increase literacy levels in our family. I am so grateful for GiveDirectly. I don't have any recommendations for change because I loved everything about GiveDirectly's processes.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving my last transfer of $450 from GiveDirectly, I felt joyful and determined to invest the money in ways that would benefit me long after the support had ended. I decided to spend $73 on farming an acre of maize. It's the rainy season now, and maize grows well here. This amount covered the costs of preparing the land, buying seeds, and paying for labor. Previously, due to limited capital, I would lease only half an acre, but this time, thankfully, I was able to cultivate a whole acre comfortably. The harvest from this farm will help ensure food security for my family and allow me to sell the surplus to pay for school fees and other family development plans, like opening a business. I also invested $150 in buying three sheep, which thrive in this area. I plan to sell them during emergencies if needed. Additionally, I used $50 to pay for my child's education. I have a young family with two kids, but only one is currently in school. I believe that preparing my children with a good educational foundation is crucial so they can grow up to be dependable members of the family and contribute to our future.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I'm looking forward to receiving the third transfer. I plan to open a kiosk in my village to sell foodstuff. As my business grows, I intend to use the profits to add an extra room for my kids. They're getting older now and need their own space. Currently, the room we have is too small for my growing family, including my six-year-old child.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Life used to be tough for me, but ever since I received the cash from GiveDirectly, everything has turned around completely. Now, I'm on the point of harvesting the maize I planted with the first transfer. food was Once scarce but now it's abundant in my home. I never had any livestock before, but now I can proudly say that I'm the wealthiest person in the village, all thanks to GiveDirectly for transforming my life. I urge you to extend the same help to other villages as you did for us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving the cash assistance from GiveDirectly, I used it to support my family in various ways. Firstly, I assisted my mother in paying my brother's school fees, which amounted to $200 as he was entering form one. My mother, suffering from Hepatitis B, was unable to cover this expense herself.Next, I allocated $150 to purchase three goats. In my previous transfer, I had bought sheep, but this time I opted for goats with the intention of breeding them for future income. This investment strategy aims to eventually fund my children's education.Additionally, I spent $50 on purchasing food to alleviate the burden on my husband, who works as a casual laborer on other people's farms. With this financial support, he can focus more on his work without worrying about providing for our family's meals.Furthermore, I invested $50 to hire laborers to prepare a piece of land for planting sukuma and spinach once we finish harvesting the maize from our half-hectare plot. This initiative not only diversifies our food sources but also reduces our reliance on manual labor. With a family of four, including my two children, my husband, and myself, the cash assistance has significantly improved our livelihood. We are immensely grateful to GiveDirectly for the positive impact it has had on our lives, relieving us from some of the hardships we previously faced.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
While I was at home, engrossed in the daily household chores with my two kids, a notification popped up—a confirmation of $200 from GiveDirectly. Instantly, uncontainable joy surged within me; I couldn't help but leap around the house, screaming with pure happiness.Meanwhile, my husband had ventured off to take on a casual job on our neighbor's farm. When he returned that evening, I eagerly shared the incredible news, and his face lit up with joy. At that moment, we both knew our lives were about to change for the better. Food had been a pressing concern, but now, with this blessing, we could see a solution to our food shortage and other pressing needs. Thank you, GiveDirectly, for providing us with this ray of hope.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Feeding our family of four has been an enduring challenge. Relying solely on my husband's intermittent casual jobs as the sole provider made sustaining us an uphill battle. However, since we received financial assistance from GiveDirectly, our circumstances have taken a turn. We secured enough food to provide sustenance for a longer stretch. This newfound stability means my husband no longer has to seek day jobs to put food on our table. Instead, he's found purpose and productivity in cultivating our own land. Witnessing him tend to our farm has been a transformative sight—a shift from dependence to self-reliance. The impact of this assistance is profound. It's not merely about the immediate relief of having food on our plates; it's about the fundamental change in our lifestyle. We've moved from constant uncertainty to a place of assurance and empowerment. Now, our future is not just about surviving but thriving. Thank you, GiveDirectly, Your support has not only relieved our immediate hunger but has also empowered us to create a sustainable future for our family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving $180.1 from GiveDirectly, we made decisions that significantly impacted our lives. Our situation had become untenable—relying solely on my husband's sporadic casual jobs for sustenance was no longer viable. With a 9-month-old baby, venturing out for work wasn't feasible for me; I had to stay home, wholly dependent on my husband to put food on our table. We allocated $100 to procure food—an essential expense that had been looming over us. With a mere half-acre of land at our disposal and no prior means to cultivate it due to financial constraints, $30 was dedicated to finally sowing seeds. It was a glimmer of hope for future sustenance. Our family's clothing situation was dire. With $50.1, we invested in clothes for my husband, me, and our two children. Christmas holiday was fast approaching, and having fresh, new attire for the festivities became an ideal aspiration. The impact of this financial aid was profound. It not only provided immediate relief in terms of food but also allowed us to invest in our future through land cultivation and granted us the simple joy of new clothing during a festive time. Thank you, GiveDirectly, for being the catalyst for these transformative changes in our lives.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Receiving the transfers means so much to me and my family because it offers us a chance to improve our lives. With the first $180 of the cash transfers, we intend to purchase food such as maize, cooking floor, and other household goods and clothes. For the second and third cash transfers, we plan to open a business in our shopping center. We intend to spend about $250 of the transfers on this. We also plan to renovate our kitchen since it is small and also add one more room to our main house. This will cost us about $400 of the transfers. For the remaining amount, we intend to do farming. This will provide us with food and also money when we sell the produce. With all these plans we believe that we shall be in a better state as compared to where we are currently.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I draw my happiness always from my family. Every day I wake up in the morning and find my family healthy I'm very grateful and delighted.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of employment is my biggest challenge. My husband and I solely depend on casual work which is scarce in our area sometimes. This has made life very difficult since we sometimes cannot afford some basic needs.
