Kadzo
enrolled.
"Since I was born, I have never slept in an iron roofed house. I was married with the hope of living a nice life with my husband but desire has never materialized. My husband and I have been staying in an old fashioned grass thatched house because of the hardship we are facing. Receiving this money will mean constructing a spacious and decent iron roofed house for my family. We will also use part of the transfers to buy livestock and support our children's education."

Joseph
received a $449 second payment.
"The cash transfers have changed my life alot for instance I am at peace and happy because I am preparing to enroll for an electrical engineering course. I will spend the cash transfers to pay for my tuition. I have spent more than two years at home after I sat for senior four exams. I had no dreams of continuing my education due to lack of money and yet this was something that I had dreamed of in the past. However, GiveDirectly has made my dreams come true. I am very grateful for this opportunity."

"I am mostly happy in the evening when I am marking my pupils' exercises. This is because I get to evaluate myself to see whether I have achieved my objectives as a teacher. It gives me an opportunity to improve and offer more quality education to the children as well as building my capacity and teaching skills."

Isaiah
received a second payment.
"GiveDirectly has given us equal opportunity to develop ourselves in terms of economic development. People had developed in different areas, like farming, livestock keeping, education, trade and others had started microfinance for credit services.
The organization has done very little to help those who had reached responsibility age, but didn't have houses of their own, but were living in their mother's houses. I believe they could had been given equal share."

Mary
received a second payment.
"I invested the second transfer on arrowroot farming. I have some piece of land in the wetlands where arrowroot does well. There is a ready market within local community and upcountry hence no shortage of customers. This farming has become a very important source of income for my family as the money we get from the sales are channelled to the education of my daughter who is in secondary level. I used some part of the transfer to do sugarcane farming as well. I believe that in the next two years, I shall be an employer and not looking for casual labor as before."

Esther
received an eighth payment.
"Before GiveDirectly came, I used to be sent home for school fees frequently due to lump sum arrears and this affected my performance, my grades were poor because I could spend most of the time at home while others were learning. This was my lowest points in my schooling. Currently, my life is different in that I have been able to pay part of my school fees and now my performance has improved greatly because of regular attendance in school. I am happy since I am seeing my dream of excelling through education is coming true."

Sidi
received a $545 initial payment.
"I spent part of the transfers to enrol my daughter in high school since she had stayed home for a year after completing her primary education. I believe by educating her I will be empowering her to since she can be employed and be self-reliant in the future. I also bought two calves that I am currently rearing hoping they will reproduce in future and increase in number. I will also be getting milk from them which will supplement our meals and improve our diet. I will also sell the surplus to the local dairy shop in order to earn us some income. In addition to all these, I also purchased four goats that to me are assets that can be sold in future specifically for emergency situations. I have been sleeping on an old traditional bed with no hopes of improving my bedding. However, through the transfer, I managed to buy a new wooden bed and also replaced the old used clothes and rags that I had used with a new a mattress, courtesy of GiveDirectly. At least now I enjoy a comfortable sleep which was never the case before."

Maxwell

"My greatest goal as a parent is to see my children reach the highest level of education there is. This is because I never got the chance to attend school and I have the struggle to reach where I am today hence I would not want my children to go through the same struggle like I did. I will do everything within my reach and out of my reach to see them through their education."
