Joyce
received a $542 initial payment.
"I have a goal in life of giving my children a better future through education and I have always struggled to invest so that I can be able to pay fees for them. I spent KES35000 of the transfer on buying a cow to add to a heifer I had. In addition to daily milk I have for my family consumption, I am sure that Soon it will multiply hence will have calves to sell in the future to meet my children fee and other financial needs. Having been adversely affected by drought in our area, we had run short of food in our store hence I spent KES800 on my family food and the remaining amount I spent on both personal and other household basic needs and Items like bedding since what we had was torn and worn out."

"Financial inadequacy is my biggest struggle in life. As casual labourers, burning charcoal to survive, my husband and I do not earn much. This has hindered our ability to provide food, quality education, clean water and other basic needs for our family. It has also continuously dimmed my hope of owning my own house because we currently have to share the two rooms we call home between me, my co-wife, husband and 8 children. "

John
received a $22 eleventh payment.
"I am a low-income earner who mostly depends on casual jobs that don't usually earn me much. This has always made me struggle to provide for my family and provide other basic needs such as proper education. Paying fees for my daughter in high school has always been a challenge due to my low income which mostly leads to her being sent away from school. I was able to start a chicken business with the help of these transfers in the last few months which has boosted me financially and made it possible to provide for my family and even pay for my daughter's school fees in time. This business has been a lifesaver to me and my family and I thank GD for the funds that made it possible."

"My long time desire has been to live a decent life with my family, a wish that has not materialized yet and this has forced me to do jobs which are considered man dominated due to their tedious nature. Since there is no option, I am always expected to be in the bush burning charcoal for my family's upkeep. This has really drained my energy and I am looking forward to changing my life for the better when I receive the transfers from Givedirectly. I plan to construct a good house for myself because the one I currently have cannot accommodate my family. Being a widow with no business skills, I wish to buy ten goats for rearing, an oxen and ox plough to upscale my farming and also use the remaining amount to support my children's education."

"I spend a lot of money seeking medical care for my family. My children get frequent cold attacks, a condition that has never received longterm treatment. This means I cannot advance financially because there is no extra money for savings. I am straining too much to provide other needs like food, education and clothing. This is because I lack a stable source of income to cater for all these and I can say financial constraint is my biggest hardship."

"The biggest challenge I face is, I do not have enough land for cultivation of crops which would in turn support education of my children through the sale of produce."

"It has been ten years since I brought my husband to our maternal home, something that is not expected in the Giriama community. Since my husband's earnings are never enough to enable him purchase a land and also support other basic needs, my children's education has been affected negatively. My first born aged thirteen years was forced to drop in standard one while the other three who are now school aged have not been enrolled. Therefore, lack of stable source of income is my biggest hardship."

"For a village elder like myself, one would have high expectations since I tackle most of the village issues, yet in a real sense, the struggle out here is so tough. Financial constraint is the biggest hardship I'm currently facing. I'm running a small hotel business at the nearby shopping center and the returns there is hardly enough to meet the educational needs of my two children who are in secondary and college levels. The journey thus far has not been easy, I sold almost all of my goats. Am remaining with only two from the previous tribe of twenty. Once I receive my transfers I will replenish my earlier tribe because was it not for them, my children would all be school dropouts by now. Again I haven't been able to build a house something that I will look into once I get my transfers."

"I am a housewife who depends solely on my husband and sometimes I feel like I am burdening him too much. I have always felt that I have a role to play in raising our financial status, but I am not able to do so because I lack a source of income. This is attributed to the fact that I am not educated enough to secure a job. I would not want my children to undergo the same life and I believe education is the only weapon that can fight generational poverty in my family. Therefore, I will start a shop business in Karimani centre that will not only meet our current needs but also enable me to save for the future. Besides, I will purchase goats for rearing because they are easy to take care of."

Wicklif
received a $45 third payment.
"My mum passed on when I was almost completing my college education. I was therefore forced to drop out of college because my dad couldn't afford my college fee. Therefore, for the next four months of my life after constructing my house, I'm planning to start saving some money so that I can go back and complete the college education."
