"The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is lack of enough resources to look after my children being that I am a single father. There is no sufficient money to pay for their education, medical care and proper feeding."

"I know in six months time my chicken will have laid eggs. I have a plan of moving my children to a private school ones the farm start generating good profits. Since I will now have the ability to raise school fees It will be wise for me to also improve the quality of education I give to my kids. I thank Give Directly for giving me the ability to expand the poultry business because this will change my living standards. I will afford to give my family the best because my financial status will have improved."

"My children get ample time studying in school as I pay their school fees right in time. This allows them to concentrate on their studies well and will eventually yield good results at the end. When I started receiving these transfers, I transferred my children from a public school to a private school. Now I am happy they are getting quality education and I do not have to do tedious jobs to earn income to pay their school fees."

"My greatest ambition has been to build a seperate house for my children, educate my kids and also to own livestock, but due to lack of adequate income, I am forced to sleep together with my grown up children in the same room. Receiving this money will mean earning me the respect that I have missed many years back. I will be able to build a seperate house for my children, and buy livestock using my first allocation. The second transfer will aid in supporting my children's education and also to start vending vegetables within the village, which will be my reliable source of income. Hence, this will change my life for the better and this is what does receiving this money means to me."

"My community is rich in dairy milk production. For a long time, my desire has been to begin a milk vending business so as to leverage on the market force of demand in a nearby shopping centre. Upon receiving this transfer, I am going to invest in this venture for sustainable development of my family. Proceeds from this business will henceforth cater for the education of our children thus secure their future."

"Three of my first born children have dropped out of school all because I did not have the financial capability to take them through secondary education. This pains me everyday. I am a casual labourer in a tea farm whereas my wife is unemployed. My efforts alone cannot fend for the umpteen mouths in the family as well as give them education. Seven of my other children are in primary school at the moment and my biggest worry is that they may not transition to secondary school due to my dire financial situation. This is the biggest hardship I've faced in my life."

"The main economic activity here is raising livestock, this is what most depends on given that the climatical condition in our region favors such practice. My desire has always been to diversify the means of income generation. Yes, livestock does well here but there have to be other sources that can take care of immediate needs like food, clothing, health care, and education. Once I receive my transfers, I will invest in a kiosk business. This will able me to generate enough income, and that will be a big boost to my household given that we had been depending on husband's income alone. "

"For me, educating my children comes first and this is simply because I want them to have access to opportunities such as jobs and higher education that I never had because of my illiteracy. With these opportunities, they will be able to provide for themselves and their future families without having to rely on other people. I plan to invest my cash transfers in livestock which I can later sell in order to meet their educational needs such as fees, stationery, uniform among others. "

"I want to prosper in business and be a successful business woman.I will expand my hand bag business by opening different shops and import different women accessories and outfits to sell in my stores across Nairobi. I will buy a house and meet my needs using the income from my businesses. I want to finish my education,be able to use my social work degree to acquire a job, and use that knowledge in the community by inspiring other young people through activism, in educating my society on gender equity and judicial killings. I will also give back to the community by opening a girl based center for young ladies in Mathare who are affected by crime and gender based violence, give counseling and help them plan for a better future."

"My top concern is being in debt. My business of selling fish has not picked up much profit, so my income is still little. I have to plan well so that my needs are met with the little income I get. Because of this I am forced to borrow loans from friends, I also delay on pay school fees for my children and even paying my house rent in time. I once was in a lot of debt and I owed both my landlord and the school quite a large amount of money. The landlord almost locked us out, my children had to spend about two weeks at home due to lack of school fees. As a parent I felt disappointed in my self for not being able to be responsible for their educational needs and they missed out on a lot of school activities as well."
