"GiveDirectly has enabled me to purchase a cow. I have been much stressed on whom to get milk from to feed my children. Finding a farmer who would be willing to sell milk to me was difficult. This is because they prefer delivering it to the processing plant at higher prices. Currently, I milk my own and used it for consumption in my house and then sell that remain to the processing plant."

"The biggest hardship I have faced is food insecurity.Three years ago we experienced drought that killed all our livestock, all the water pans ran dry and all crops dried up.Because we did not have any cereals in the stores,we could not help but starve. There was no economic activity to engage in so as to get money for food which prices were exorbitant then."

"I have been living in a grass thatched house for so long. Due to lack of enough rains in our region, finding grass to replace the old ones every year had become a big problem. This led to my house leaking during rainy season making it difficult for us to sleep in as everywhere would be filled with water. When I received my first transfers, I spared some amount and used them to purchase building materials such as iron sheets, nails, timber, windows and doors which I kept at my inlaws house as they have a bigger one. Finding a Mason has been a big challenge as most people in our village are building new houses thus making them charge higher prices. This prompted me to buy materials and keep them so that I will start building my house in February when most people are done building theirs. I am planning to use the remaining amount which I saved in paying a mason who will come and build my house."

"I spent my second transfer to buy a dairy cow which I had always wished to buy but due to lack of enough money I was not able to.I am now convinced that my family will no longer be taking black tea as we did in the past and we will also be able to sell some milk so as to bring in some income. I also used part of my transfer to buy steel doors and windows to fix in my house that was already under construction. Having a steel door in my house means so much to me because I believe my house is quite safe for anyone who might attempt breaking in and as well it makes my house look more beautiful. I spent the remaining part of my transfer to purchase two sacks of maize which we will use for consumption until the next harvest. wanted to use it for produce milk for sales and consumption. My children will at least get something to eat during this dry season when getting food in the market at fair prices is quite challenging and I believe food security is assured in my house."

"Receiving this money means adding more livestock to my current herd of about 5 cows and several goats. This is because livestock is a very lucrative business in my village, animals do very well here compared to crops due to the unpredictable weather and also fetch very good prices at the market. I also get products such as milk from the animals which am able to sell and earn extra income to meet my family's needs of food and education with ease."

"Receiving this money means I will be able to customarily legalise my marriage. For a long time I have wanted to pay dowry to legalize my marriage but I have not been able to do so because the little money I earn daily from the cane cutting and weeding that I in the farms goes into our food and clothing needs. With this transfer I will be able to buy cows and pay as bride price. The remaining balance will go into improving our house and tilling our farm to produce more food for the family because right now we already buying rains and the grain prices have started increasing."

"The biggest hardship I have faced is food insecurity. The land is available but largely unproductive and the rains are unreliable.Furthermore, the amount of money I get from casual jobs is not enough to afford the exorbitant food prices. This has forced my family members to live on one meal a day."

"My income has increased. I am happy. I am a horticultural farmer and hiring of equipment was so expensive and most of the time I could plant, this means I could harvest late too when the markets are so flooded and I have to lower my prices. It never earned me much at the time. The biggest difference I have in my current life is that I have my own water pump that has seen me increase my profits too. I do not have to wait for the rains and I have been harvesting right on time now. I have also managed to expand my markets and my vegetables are always ready for markets any time any day. My family is leading a more comfortable life now as I am able to afford more of their basic needs something I have struggled to meet from the additional profits I have been making now."
