"The prolonged drought has made food prices go high. Since this is low season for charcoal burners, the little that I get can only afford us one meal a day. My family is even used to spending the whole day without food. This has not been easy especially for the young school-going children. I know they can comprehend very little when they have nothing in the stomach and I understand their drop-in performance was a result of all this we are going through."

"Maize is a staple food in our area but currently, maize grains have been selling expensively due to their scarcity. This happened since the arrival of maize rust disease which affected maize production in our area. Our family income is little about KES 3000 monthly which is not sufficient to pay family bills and pay these inflated food prices. This left us to depend on borrowed food or even skip meals."

"The challenges that I am currently facing are the distance that I cover in traveling to reach farmers and buying drugs for use in my job. I do not have any means and rely on motorcycle taxis to reach farmers who are very far and are very expensive. It is also expensive to acquire drugs and other supplies for farmers from other agro-vets and having one will enable me to sell to them at subsidized prices and also earn something from it."

"I have always wanted to own livestock of my own. When I received the transfer I went straight ahead and bought a goat. I decide to buy the goat because I have a great plan on how they will help me in the future. That one goat that I bought is a great investment to me. In the next 2 to 3 years God willing if everything goes right I will have more than 20 goats. When I decide to sell some at the market, it will fetch some good prices. I can then use the money to attend to my needs."

"Currently, I face challenges of financial instability. Being a businessman I depend on the profits from the sale of goats. These profits are usually unpredictable because it depends on the market prices and the competition in the market. Payment of school fees and expansion of this business has become a challenge as a result of lower revenues. Two of my children in secondary school have had high incidences of absenteeism because of failure to pay their school fees. This has led to them performing dismally ."

"Putting food on the table is something that gives me happiness. Food in our region is expensive now that maize is no longer productive due to an attack by maize rust disease and adverse weather conditions. This gave retailers an upper hand to inflate food prices."

"Financial instability is my current challenge. I depend on farming for a living which is adversely affected by poor climatical conditions and low prices. It is quite hard meeting my daily life and my family needs with these scarce resources."

"The challenges I am facing currently are that I don't have enough food to feed my family. In addition to this I am a business person and when I go to buy tomatoes and small fish(bonya) which i sell sometimes I find that prices have gone up and I can't even order to sell. This takes me backwards because at that moment I will not have anything to sell. This is really hard on me."

"Currently, I am facing the challenge of not having enough food. I depend on piece work to find money to buy food. I do not have enough food because I harvest very little maize to last a year. Fertilizer prices are very expensive and I cannot to buy fertilizer for my maize field. So growing maize without fertilizer leads to little harvest."
