Joseph
received a $524 second payment.
"I spent 30,000 KES of my second transfer to invest on my existing poultry business. For instance, I bought chicken feeds and medicine. I had started this business using my first transfer and I am yet to sell the eggs and hopefully have sustainable income. Since my land is very unproductive, I did not harvest enough maize to sustain my family for long so I used 12000 KES to purchase six sacks of maize that would last us for sometime. Lastly,I used the rest of the cash to clear fee arrears for my child who completed secondary education last year but was not allowed to collect his certificates because of the arrears."

"The biggest difference I have had in my daily life is that my children can now stay in school without fearing that they would be sent home for school fee and stationery since education is the best gift I could ever give to my children. I spent most of my transfer bettering their education because it determines their future."

Kadzo
received a $541 initial payment.
"I spent part of my first transfer on purchasing iron sheets and other building materials. I had previously purposed to build but due to lack of money, I couldn't. The old house I was living in was in a bad state and nearly collapsed and I was constantly affected by rains since it would leak and wet everything inside and I could not afford to have a good sleep at all. I thank GiveDirectly for the support which I received at the very time I was in dire need of a new house. I also spent some amount to buy goats to keep as assets which I am hoping to sell in the near future once they reproduce and multiply in number. This will enable me to support my children's education as they progress. The rest I used to shop for my family and bought enough food since their was also shortage of food for the whole family, due to my low income from casual jobs."

Nyevu

"The biggest difference that this transfer has brought into my daily life is that at first, I didn't own any livestock and this is all in the past as own some goats which I will be taking care of them in my own compound. These are my own assets of which once they reproduce in future I will be able to sell some and use the money to support my children's education in order for them to achieve their goals."

Bendera
received a $537 initial payment.
"I spent part of my first transfer to buy a pair of oxen for ploughing. Previously I was farming and cultivating a small piece of land which would produce poor harvests which would not last long, due to the inefficient methods I was applying and also it was expensive to hire from neighbours. Oxens are always the better choice in my area for anyone who would wish to cultivate a bigger tract of land and for early preparations which promises better yields. I know that with this single pair, it will relieve me the burden of hiring from neighbours and be able to increase my acreage. I also spent part of my transfer to purchase 3 goats that and I am trusting that they will reproduce and be able to further my investments and also will be of great help to help me providing education to my children. On the remaining amount, I bought some food for my family and also did some shopping for children for this was an opportunity for me to prepare as the schools reopen for another year."

Mujeni
received a $538 initial payment.
"My ambition has been to see my children achieve their goals in their education but due to financial constraints, I saw myself failing them as they were performing well but I had no money to advance their education further as I didn't have a stable source of income enough to help them. On receiving my first transfer, I paid school fees for my son who will be joining teachers training college and my other son who will be joining high school tomorrow. I used the remaining amount to purchase a pair of oxen to facilitate cultivation for maximum utilization of my farm since it was underutilized due to inadequate farming resources. I will also be hiring to my neighbours at a fee, which means I will be able to earn an income through them. I also purchased two goats to keep as assets and which I will use as a source income in times of need by selling them."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is happiness since my husbands' dream of joining a college in order to continue with his education has come to pass. From this, I believe that even if he will not secure a job for himself after finishing his studies, he will have acquired some knowledge and skills which he will put into practice by doing something productive which will make us have some income."
