"When I received my first transfers, I spent part of it in buying a cow. I opted on this since apart from giving me milk for our daily consumption, I will be able to sell some of them and get some money to use in supporting my children's education. Due to inadequate rainfall in our region, so many seasonal rivers have dried up. This has led to people traveling for long distance on a daily basis looking for water. My family was not an exception to this and it has always made my children spend their evening hours looking for water instead of doing their revision. This prompted me to spare part of my transfers to buy a water tank. With this, I will be leasing a donkey once a week in order to use it to carry more water several times and store them in my tank. People in our region usually buy new clothes during festive seasons. I am glad that my family was never left out since I was able to buy them some new clothes and shoes using some amount from my transfer. Buying maize flour has been my daily routine and it is quite expensive when bought in small quantities. I used the remaining amount to buy three sacks of maize and 30 kg of beans so that it would sustain us until next harvest."

"I have a daughter who is not married and has five children and they are all under my care. When I received my first transfers, I decided to give her a helping hand by paying school fees for her children. I also bought two goats as an investment. When they have reproduced and increase in number, I will be able to sell them and use the money in my grandchildren's education. I have been sleeping on the floor and my bedding has always been old clothes. I decided to spend part of my transfers to buy a bed and a mattress so that I would be sleeping comfortably. used the remaining amount to buy four sacks of maize, 32 kg beans and 50 kg rice in order to boost my family in terms of food."

"My life is currently much different from how it was four months ago. Unlike before, I am now doing a cleaner and relatively easier work of teaching in a nearby primary school. Consequently, I am saving much of my energy to be used in handling my own stuff. Moreover, I have more time to rest and focus on other personal projects unlike before when most of my day was covered by the tedious casual work of weeding and carrying heavy loads for my neighbors. Still, I have managed to raise school fees for my son who has just joined a private pre-school to begin his studies. Without the GiveDirecly transfers, I believe that my son could be studying in a public school - something that I do not like because of the relatively low-quality education services offered as opposed to the private ones. Thanks a lot, GD, may God continue to uplift you."

"It has always been my prayer to own a cow but I had not achieved this due to insufficient money. I am now happy since I have been able to own one unlike before. I believe that through this cow, I will be able to sell milk and use the money I will get to buy basic needs like toiletries. I will also be able to save some amount on a daily basis and use them to pay for my children's education."

"I intend to save more of these transfers to use it in paying school fees for my child and keep maintaining him in the private school he is attending. The private school offers better quality education as compared to others."

"The biggest difference in my daily is that I never lack basic needs like before. The family burden that I had got easier since most parts of the transfers go towards buying basic needs like food, clothing and education costs for my children. I have also joined a table banking group which is a great savings plan for me. Before the transfers, I did not have a saving culture and I am really grateful since as soon as I get my share from the table banking I am going to spend them on buying a dairy cow."

"Receiving this money means I will be able to invest in my children's education by buying goats which I can sell later as they give birth and multiply. I love goats because they don't require lots of water thus can survive in dry weather longer than cows. I will also open a shop business for two of my children in Mombasa because it will make more profit there than here in the village where financial capability is very low. "

"I have always wanted my children to study up to university level since I was not able to go even up to high school level. I have always seen education as an investment and it always saddens me when my children are sent back home from school to collect school fees. Since I was able to offset their arrears using my transfers, I have been able to pay their first terms school fees using the money I got from my daily hustles. This has always made me so happy and for the first time in my life, my children will attend school for three consecutive months without being sent back home. Without GiveDirectly, I would not be so happy as I am now and this is so far the biggest difference in my daily life."

"I spent my second transfer on payment of school fees for my two sons who are learning in University and Secondary School respectively. I decided to do that because when my elder son was admitted in Secondary School, it found that my husband had alredy died. My brothers in-law declined to give me support to educate my son. Instead, they were gossiping that I will only sell one child in order to educate my son. I became aware that the only relatives I have at my in-law family are my children, and I vow to give them my best when it comes to education. They are my only hope in that society."
