How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
To develop while living in Baringo County, one must either start a business, conduct irrigation farming, or raise cattle. If one wants to implement irrigation, he or she must rent land close to the irrigation-producing areas; otherwise, one is forced to rely on unreliable small-scale farming. Due to my advanced age, practicing farming will be quite challenging as I can no longer complete the majority of tasks on my own. My life's work will therefore be focused on raising livestock. I currently have plans to purchase more goats to raise. This will give me access to a steady supply of milk, and I can occasionally sell one of the goats to make some money.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The best concept was to give us cash since it opened our eyes to the different necessities we lacked as we invested in them. Most people who were struggling financially have made improvements to their lives in various ways. Some have built nicer homes, while others have invested in livestock farming while ensuring that there's enough food in their households. Nothing would have been done better than how it was done.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I purchased ten pieces of iron sheets and some steel when I got my second transfer. I intend to construct a more opulent home for myself using these resources. This is because I don't like where my current home is located. For a very long time, I had wanted to relocate to another area of my farm but had not been able to do so because of a lack of resources. In addition to these, I bought some millet seeds and hired some individuals to help me prepare my field for planting and weeding. Since these crops are more prevalent in our region and are drought resistant, I decided to go with them. Additionally, I spent money on a water storage tank and some food items.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. I heard my phone ring and I asked one of my children called Sokome to confirm for me whether I had indeed received money from GiveDirectly. She is the only person who knows my Mpesa pin and whom I trust with my phone. When she confirmed that indeed I had been sent the money then I asked her to help me in purchasing some of the things that I already had in mind. I also had one of my children who was in college and I had really struggled to raise money to pay her school fees. This was such a huge relief for me.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the fact that I am now happier than I have ever been. Looking at what I have been able to achieve from the farm that I was able to prepare to the water container that I bought and the school fees that I paid for my children makes me so happy. These are things I would not have done had it not been for GiveDirectly. I can hardly do any odd casual jobs to earn an income and the livestock that I own have all been sold to settle school fees for my children. These transfers came in at a time that I needed them the most. I am most happy knowing that I will be able to achieve much more with the remaining transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used $40 to buy a water tank that would help me collect enough drinking water for my family. I had one initially which broke leaving us with no container to collect water. We would have problems accessing clean drinking water. I never had a motorcycle that would help me collect water from far away places and this would bring me a lot of problems more often. I also used another $75 to buy pieces of iron sheets that would help me improve my house. It has lately been attacked by termites and failing to improve it will eventually render me and my two grandchildren homeless. I then used the remaining amount of $80 to buy food and to till a piece of land that I own. I am so happy that I have already planted crops in my farm and just waiting for the rains to boost them. I would not have tilled my piece of land yet had I not received transfer from GiveDirectly. I am so grateful that my plans and dreams have been turned into a reality.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Our place is dry and water is so scarce. Someone has to trek for 5 kilometers to find water in the borehole. I am not able to cover such distance because of my old age, I, therefore, buy from water vendors. It is against this backdrop that I intend to purchase a water tank for water harvesting to save me from the trouble of looking for water. I plan to purchase a water tank worth $ 250, this will be a major reprieve for me, I am so elated about the idea and looking forward to fulfilling the dream of owning a water tank that has eluded me for a long now since I could not afford.I am eternally grateful for the help from GiveDirectly. I will use the rest of the money to purchase foodstuffs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
There is little to be happy about. I just live a day at a time, there are more problems to worry than what bring happiness. It is only recently that the government released cash transfers for the elderly which had stopped for some time and I was happy that at least I will get something to buy food.I will go for it this week at Marigat and use it to buy household goods and foodstuff. This is a year of blessings and I anticipate that life will be better.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am faced with a myriad of challenges but top on the list is food insecurity. I buy food from the nearby shopping center but their cost has since spiraled up and I can hardly afford it, 1 kg of flour retails at $1 which to me is high. The situation is further worsened because of my old age. I cannot do casual jobs to earn a living because I am feeble and so I depend on government cash transfers for the elderly though they are meager. I live a life of despair, destitution, and loneliness. My wife passed on almost 20 years ago and so I am left on my own, nobody assists me safe for my children when their visit.
