How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Having used the first transfer and the second transfer to buy building materials for the construction of a new house, I now have a goal of completing the house. I am grateful that I was among the beneficiaries of GiveDirectly transfers but the needs that we had as a family were so many such that we could not accomplish all with the money received. I was able to help my brother who is pursuing his university education to pay his school fees of KES 20000 and also helped my young family of one to meet our needs. I am looking forward to getting casual works that would enable me accumulate enough money to be able to build the house to completion.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did very well in making sure that they sensitized the community before sending us money. The sensitization worked well as evidenced by how everyone put the money into good use and served the purpose of alleviating poverty and improving livelihoods. On the other hand, I felt that GiveDirectly could do more in making sure that no one is left behind in terms of enrollment. I have two people in mind for example that I thing were wrongly excluded from the program. I hope that something could be done to make sure everyone benefits in such programs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 20000 from my second transfer to pay school fees for my brother who is pursuing her university education and used the remaining amount to buy other building materials and to pay casuals who helped in the construction of a new house. I have two of my siblings in school and my parent is single handedly paying their school fees and I felt the need to support her when I could having cleared my university education recently. I now rely on odd casual jobs to make an income as I wait for any opening that may come my way to better my life and that of my family.I am excited that the house is almost complete and very soon we shall have a new and descent house to call home.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at my house resting when at about 9 a.m, I received a message that I had received KES from GiveDirectly. It was a lovely surprise that made me so excited to begin the construction of my new house.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am so delighted that this transfer has enabled me to build a new, spacious house for my family. Until a few weeks ago, we lived in a tiny house that could barely accommodate us. I hoped to build another one, but I could not afford to, because the money I earn from poultry farming is not enough. Receiving this transfer has made that possible. I am proud of the fact that my family has a decent home that meets our needs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The house we lived in before was too small for my family. Even though it made me concerned, I could not afford to build another. So when I received this transfer, I spent KES 42,000 on construction material and labour costs to build another. I also spent KES 6,000 on chicken since I am an avid poultry farmer.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will mean a lot to me. I have a young family and I have not paid dowry for my wife. I plan that when I get my first transfer, I will buy a cow with KSH 20,000 to top up other cows that my family has given me and pay dowry. I also plan to expand my poultry farming with KSH 25,000 and buy their feeds with KSH 8,000 and use the other amount to support my mother and my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the afternoon because I get to mingle with my friends and share ideas on matters life and investment.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My dad died when we were young and my mum stepped in to support us in terms of schooling, feeding and also acting as a dad. We lost everything and had to stay with my grandparents due to the feuds that arose after his death. Starting all over again became a challenge that has affected us and me till now because my mother supported us until recently when Covid-19 struck.
