How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
We depend on subsistence and dairy farming for survival and since my spouse is a person living with a disability, he rarely engages himself in tiresome tasks. Because of this, I sometimes work on other people's farms for pay once I am through with mine. It is my wish to start a small business of buying and selling milk within our locality. With this, I will be able to spend the profits on educating our five children who are in different levels of education.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly officers did well by making sure that all the eligible households in the village were enrolled in the program. In addition, we were all given an equal amount of money and it enabled us to achieve most of our goals. I do not find anything that it did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had already built a more spacious house for my family and when I received my recent transfer, I decided to make it more permanent by cementing its floors since the walls are made of timber. Due to this, I spent KES 40000 to purchase all the necessary materials and to pay for the labor. I am glad that cleaning it has been made easier hence it is tidy all the time. Using the remaining amount, I bought maize flour and clothes for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 11 pm and we had just retired to our beds. Suddenly, I heard my phone ringing notifying me of a new message. I was not yet asleep so I reached out for it to check what the SMS was all about. I was so excited when I opened the SMS which was reading that we had received KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I wanted to share the good news with the rest of my family members but on seeing how fast asleep they were, I changed my mind. In the morning I broke the good news to them and they were so happy on hearing about it. We thanked God and GiveDirectly for the help.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a very big difference to my family. We were able to pay school fees for our children with part of the money that we got and we also bought some clothes. They are thus no longer being sent home due to arrears and they are happy because their clothes had become old. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for this.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent most of the transfer money on buying a water tank. We bought a 5000 litre tank at KES 32000. The water tank was our topmost priority upon receiving the transfer. This is because we usually make long trips to the river to fetch water, especially during the dry season. The tank was going to enable us to collect rainwater for our household use and thus we will no longer have to make the long trips. We were not able to buy the tank before because we didn't have the money. My husband is sickly and hence he is not able to work a lot. I am hence the breadwinner of the family and I usually depend on the milk sales to earn a living for my family of seven. Most of the money that I make usually goes to the payment of school fees for our five children and buying food, especially maize. Apart from the tank, we also spent KES 4150 on buying the gutters and installing them. We also bought two bags of maize at KES 3200 per bag, a bed at KES 4000, and a mattress at KES 3600. With the remaining amount of money, we used it in paying school fees, buying clothes for the children, and some foodstuffs for consumption during the Christmas day. We are so much thankful to GiveDirectly because all these became possible due to their help.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I posed constructing my house due to financial contain. The little I receive from my casual job goes to buying food and paying school fees leaving me with nothing to save or buy materials to complete the construction of my house. With this money, I will plan KES 60000 to finish constructing my house and renovating my kitchen. Water is now another hurdle in our area, this money will allow me to buy a plastic water tank at KES 35000 and harvest rainwater water. With the remaining money, I will food and clothing to my children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have been struggling financially to provide food for my household now that I am the sole breadwinner of the family. The good news from the Baraza about the aid of GiveDirectly gave me hope and happiness now that this burden will go off me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband was affected with polio leaving him with nothing much to do in providing for the family. This left me as the sole breadwinner for the family. This makes me struggle financially to meet the family's basic needs.
