How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than it would have been if I never received my transfer in that I am living a happy life after completing the fee payment for my son. Formerly, I was constantly worried about the future of my children due to the accumulated huge fee balance they have in school. In addition, I was able to boost my farming by purchasing an Oxen and ox-plough with the first transfer this will assure food security for the family. In addition, I was able to repair my motorbike and restart the taxi business which I had stopped due to lack of cash for maintenance.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, I thank GiveDirectly for coming up with a cash transfer program. Through the transfer, my life has been transformed for the better. I was able to restart the taxi job an activity I have been relying on for a very long time. I do not see anything that the organisation does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $200 of my transfer to complete the payment of my last born son's fee arrears so that he may get his examination results. In addition, I started the payment of the college fees of my son who is joining a medical course in August this year. Also, I used $100 to purchased 2 pairs of school uniforms and cleared school fees for my 3 grandchildren who are still in primary school. Furthermore, I spent $180 to repair my motorbike which had mechanical problems for a long time but I was not able to repair it due to lack of adequate finances. Currently, I have restarted the motorbike taxi a reliable source of income for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was my neighbour who came and informed me that she had received her first transfer. I quickly called for my helper who checked my messages and confirmed that I had also received mine. I felt happy and thanked GiveDirectly for the financial support.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Owning a cow is the biggest difference in my daily life. Having livestock to us is a source of wealth and valuable assets that can be depended upon. As time goes by, I am expecting that this cow will reproduce and have many of them. I will be getting milk for my family's consumption and sell the surplus in the dairy shops and hotels and earn an income. In addition, Its a saving for the future of my children's education because I will be selling the offsprings to raise their school fees.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 15000 of my first transfer on buying a cow. Its an asset that I can rely on and as it reproduces, I can sell the offspring to cater for my financial needs. I will also be getting milk for my family's consumption and sell the surplus, thus earning an income. My children have also been sheltering in my neighbours house at night which is not good for them because they are still young. Thus I built a new house for my them. I bought iron sheets and building poles to facilitate this. I also spent a portion of the transfer to hire some laborers to weed my crops. I had a bigger acreage which would have taken a long time to finish the job. Lastly,I saved a small amount for my children so that when they open schools, I will be in a position to pay for their school fees.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will help me increase my livestock by adding two dairy cows. This will cost me 500 USD. When they increase in number, I will be able to sell some and get money. My house is small given that I live with three children and eight grand children. I have a plan of building a separate house for the elder boys because they cannot live in one house. This will cost around 400 USD.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Ending the day well is a big achievement for me. I am usually happy in the evening because God has taken care of me in all my duties. I spend most of my day in the farm and around the compound doing house chores.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have a heavy burden of taking care of my grand children. I am a widow and my daughter who passed on left behind six children. I also have two other grandchildren under my care together with my three children.I am no longer active doing jobs because of my age. I am 68 years old. I only depend on my farm which is not productive enough to take care of the needs of all this children. This is my biggest hardship.
