How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to connect tap water to our home. This will ensure that we have readily available water for household use. At the moment, I am forced to walk for a long distance of more than 15 kilometers to get this essential commodity. Furthermore, I am planning to sell them at KES 10 per 20 liters of water to our neighbors to earn an additional income to assist me in meeting my small financial needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Gd did well in sending cash transfer to poor households in the society. Through the transfers which was unconditional, we were able to make choice on how to spent it to change our lives for the better. I am very happy that I was able to own a spacious house for the family something that I would not have achieved very soon.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a single parent of 4 children, after separating from my spouse 15 years ago. Temporary casual jobs were what I depended on to raise my children. Because of the poverty, my firstborn was forced to drop out of school when he was in class 7. The income that I was earning from the causal activity was not enough even to feed us. I had desired to construct a decent shelter for my family since the house that we were using earlier was small and could not fully accommodate the family of 5 members. In addition, I was using one room as a store and was forced to share a room with the kids and some were in their adolescent age. I spent KES 40,000 to construct a spacious 4-roomed house for the family. Currently, we are doing the final touches and I am looking forward to relocating to the new house something that will restore the joy in my life. Also, I used the KES 10,000 to purchase sufficient foodstuff for the family that has been helping us up to now.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Receiving this money meant so much to me and my family. I have no source of income , the transfers was an eye opener and made me fulfil my family's needs as I had plans to extend my house. I received it so early in the morning while taking breakfast with my family, it was one of the memorable moments since it was a very huge amounts that I have never received from any charitable organization.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving the transfers is that having expanded my business, It is picking up so well, with the profits , I am able to save some money for my kids school fees, unlike before the transfers when I had no source of income.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a mother of four boys who are now teenagers. I have a small house of one bedroom, my boys had to sleep from a neighbours house. With the transfers, I managed to expand my house so as to accommodate my boys, this costed Kshs 20,000. I am a business woman, I run a small business which almost collapsed due to the pandemic that hit our country recently, I therefore used Kshs 20,000 of the transfers to buy more stock for the existing business. I also stocked food worth Kshs 10,000. Getting regular food has been a challenge to my household. Since I received the transfers, skipping of meals is now a thing of the past. I thank Give Directly for the transfers.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I own a shop in my village as a full-time job for me and I sell foodstuff. Receiving this money means a business boost for me, I intend to use 30,000 KES to increase my stock so that I can cater to the needs of all customers who come to be served at my shop. I will also open a food kiosk and sell food, we have a secondary day school where students tend to stay hungry because there is no food joint nearby. I will invest in the two businesses with high hopes of a better tomorrow. I will save the profit from the two businesses to be able to take my 3 children to secondary school education.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I was enrolled in a program from Germany where I benefited by getting 15 goats to rear and sell upon maturity. This gave me joy in my life knowing I have investments for my children. In the same year, I have been enrolled to GiveDirectly to receive cash transfers, this gives me joy benefitting from both programs.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The economic condition of this country has been a challenge, prices for items inflate every day. This has made business stagnant, I keep my shop items for more than 3 months and tend to expire. This has always given me losses to my business and I sometimes wish to close down. This has made me venture into other businesses selling firewood to sustain my family.
