How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
At the moment, I don't have any other new goals due to school fees responsibilities. But I am grateful for the support that has impacted our lives greatly. All my children are comfortably studying in their respective schools. All thanks to the organization for their amazing support.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Our community has changed, the impact is well evident. We have people who have built decent houses, others opted to buy cows and many more good things. Indeed we have transformed into a more developed society. I have not witnessed anything that was not done well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving my second transfer, I used KES 35,000 in paying school fees for my two children who are in a boarding school. This came as a big relief in our lives because for the first time we never strained in accumulating the cash. I have seven children in total, more so, I depend on farming to earn an income. In addition to that, I used KES 5000 on farming, thereafter, I used the remaining amount in buying foodstuffs. I am glad that I achieved so much in a short time, unlike before, where it was difficult due to financial constraints. I am forever grateful for the support.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 am and I had just come from milking the cow when I heard my phone beeping alerting me of an incoming SMS. I pulled it out from my pocket to check, and to my surprise, it was a message indicating that I had received the promised amount from GiveDirectly. I was so happy on seeing this that I jumped up with joy. I immediately called my husband who was away to inform him of the great news. He was so happy to hear this because we now knew that we were going to achieve our goal.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer from GiveDirectly has brought a big difference in our lives. Having cleared the second term school fees for our two children, we have been able to have some peace of mind. We therefore no longer worry that they are going to be sent home. We were also able to buy some food that is going to sustain us for a while with part of the transfer. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for easing our burden.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent most of the money that we got in paying school fees for our two children who are both in a boarding high school. When they re-opened schools for the second term, they had gone empty-handed without paying a single penny and hence we were worried that they were going to be sent back home. We hence decided to settle down the debt with the transfer before the schools think of doing so. Getting school fees has always been our biggest challenge especially now with the crashed program due to the covid-19 pandemic. We do not have a stable source of income as my husband who is the breadwinner of the family is casually employed as a watchman.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a mother of six primarily depending on subsistence farming to meet my family's needs. I never got to pursue education a goal that I have lived to regret about but I have focused on educating my children to ripe the beauty of education that I missed. Receiving a cash transfer to me means I will be in a position to pay my children's school fees since I am planning to use KES50000 to clear their arrears and next terms fees. I am certain this will give them ample time to study thus achieve good grades that can take them to good secondary schools and colleges. On the other hand, I will be at peace as I look for more to meet future terms fees and settle other daily household needs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. Looking at my children up for a new day in good health is my happiness that I always thank God for as I prepare our breakfast so they can leave for school while I go to my farm.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I got married when I was about eighteen years old on and to me, this was the biggest achievement I had ever made in life just until we moved to our house with my husband when I got to see I had made a big mistake. We had nothing to start with thus we were left with hard casual jobs to meet our daily needs a job I had never done before. The biggest hardship I have ever faced in my life is getting married at a tender age forcing me into entering hard and low-paying casual while young.
