How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I managed to take my daughter to a private school where there is quality education and she has really improved on her academic performance. I never had an opportunity to get better education and therefore would not like that my children go through the mistake again. Education is light and I feel ashamed that I lack any skills to compete for the job opportunities that has made life very challenging to me. I bought a water pump that I intend to use for horticultural farming. I have a piece of land that borders a permanent river that I would like to irrigate during dry season when there is scarcity of vegetables, onions and tomatoes. There are two schools and a local market neaby that I am targeting as potential consumers. As a young, vibrant and self driven man, this will be my self-employment and also other villagers that I shall contract for casual labor. I bought a solar lighting system, this has saved me a lot from the daily budget of paraffin which at times was never enough. My children can nowardays have their studies and do homework without any worries of lamps going off like before when I used tin lamps.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has given people the power to make choices and decisions on preferred desires. People have built houses, paid school fees, ploughed their farms, met medical bills, bought clothes and paid dowry for those who had never legalized their marriage. There is a lot of hope on the faces of people, they speak with dignity and make statements of worth. GiveDirectly has given our community a new face. How I wished that more transfers could be channelled especially to the orphans, elderly and sick.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent the transfer on purchase of four goats, we have a wide grazing field that makes it easy to rear them. Goats are fast breeding and I believe that in the near future, they will have increased in numbers and I shall be able to sell some and buy a cow. I spent some part of the transfer on purchase of bigger jerrycans for rain water storage. We usually find it difficult and expensive to buy water during dry seasons. I shall be relieved from budgeting for water and instead save the money for future education of my children.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my life since I received this transfer is that I now have a sofa set in my house. Ever since I built my house last year, we have been sitting on a mat because I was not even able to buy seats. My daily income from casual work was too little to even cater for my family needs, leave alone buying seats. My friends thought I was too selfish to even welcome them to my house but I and my family knew the reasoon why. Ever since I bought the new seats with part of the transfer I received from GD, I have been free with everyone and they are now wondering why it took me so long to welcome them into my house. I appreciate GD for taking away my shame.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
When I received this transfer, I was very happy because I have been ashamed of the state of my house. I would turn down every opportuinity of my friends coming to visit me because I did not have any seats where they could sit. Now I feel confident to welcome even my in-laws to my house.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent my first transfer on buying seats since I didn't have any seat in my house. Before I bought them, we used to sit on a mat because my daily income could not be enough to buy seats. I used part of the transfer to buy bedding because what I have been sleeping on was too old and my blanket was torn. This really made it very hard to sleep especially during the rainy season because of the cold. The remaining part of my transfer, I used in buying a goat which I am keeping as remembrance of Give Directly and as an investment for my family. I believe out of this, I will be able to own even herds of cows.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this transfer means a positive transformation in my life. I shall use the money to purchase some cows from which I shall be able to get milk both for my consumption and sales.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning when all my family members wake up strong and hopeful in life. I rejoice whenever I see them a live and happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I face is the inability to provide meals for my family since my wife and I do not have any source of income. We only depend on casual labour which are very rare to find.
