How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have bought a dairy cow at a cost of 28000 Ksh. I always buy milk from my neighbors and it's so costly for me since I do not have a continuous source of income. I depend on small scale farming to earn income to support my family in meeting the basic household items and pay school fees for my children. The amount of money that I get through this is so small and cannot meet all these needs at once. I devote much of my time doing the casual jobs in the village to add up.This is taking much of my time which I could have used to do my daily activities at home. When my dairy cow reproduce I will no longer buy milk. My family will have enough milk. I will also sell the surplus milk to meet other household items and even pay part of the school fees for my children. The money that I could have used to buy milk I will redirect to other activities that needed my attention. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my own opinion GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community to build better houses and to buy dairy cows. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend the money I received from GiveDirectly to buy a dairy cow at a costof 28000 Ksh.I used to buy milk and it was so costly for me. This is because I depend on small scale farming to earn an income. I also used part of the money to pay school for my three children in secondary school. My children used to be sent home to collect the school fees and this was affecting their performance. So the second priority was to pay all their school fees for the whole term. The rest of the money I used it to cultivate my farm and bought the seeds and fertilizers. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was five minutes to seven in the morning when I woke up. On checking my phone, I found good news from GD and was very excited. I relayed the good news to my husband and kids who also confirmed the truth on my phone. They immediately woke up and we all celebrated for joy. In my village, you needn't ask if people received the tranfers because the atmosphere was filled with shouts of joy and laughter.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is availability of adequate food for my family. This has led to hunger reduction and our thoughts are now stabilized because my family is well fed. I am also happy that I can milk my own cow which I have been desiring to buy it for the last five years but couldn't afford. Right now I am stress free because I have paid school fees, my kids are more neat and have grown fatter. Initially, I used to stay awake all night because my future was bleak due to alot of desires and plans I had of which I wasn't sure if they would come to pass.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of my transfer on a dairy cow because I didn't have one and used to buy a liter per day which is quite costly. Some was spent on school fees for my daughter who's in high school because the money came at a time timebmy husband had lost his job due Covid19. I also bought latest clothing fashion for family because we were used to buying second hand clothes. Some part of transfer was spent on two sacks of maize to sustain my family and the rest on maize seeds because initially we used to struggle to buy farm inputs.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that my family shall afford to buy a mature cow because we currently own a small calf that may take years to mature. In our community, cattle are highly valued because they are a sign of wealth and a source of milk for consumption and sale. Since we do not have a reliable source of income, we almost always strive to meet our basic needs and cannot afford to engage in other developmental projects.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening when resting after successfully accomplishing the day's tasks. This restores my energy as I wait for the next day's events.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
In the year 2014, my husband lost his job when their company was calling down. Since then, he has never secured another reliable source of income. Accordingly, our firstborn who joined the secondary school the year 2017 has frequently been out of school due to lack of fees. Besides, our family has been struggling to make ends meet unlike before. Hence, my husband's dismissal from his job serves as the biggest hardship I have faced in life.
