How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The greatest difference in my life is that now I have a good house where we can live with my family. Were it not for GD, it would have taken me quite sometime before I get enough money for purchasing building materials for building a house. I really thank GD for making it possible for me to built a house at this time.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly help us a lot in our family and am happy about it. Firstly, I was able to pay my school fees arrears to receive my certificate so that I can look for a job. I was even able to take my wife to school so that she can get technical skill and can help us to generate income when she gets a job.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
The second transfer which I got from GD, I spent to buy a solar panel and battery for lighting in our house and it cost me KES 5000. I then spent KES 15000 to take my wife for tailoring course. Some portion I spent KES 4900 to buy food and clothes for the family. I then took my wife for technical training to be a tailor and paid her school fees which are KES 15000. I also bought some chicken which cost KES 1500 and I am left with KES 18000 which I have saved for future use.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving such a windfall means a tremendous transformation in my life. I am married and I intend to build a house for my family, first thing upon receiving the first transfer. At the moment I live at the back of a shop for a home; which I feel is not decent enough. Secondly, I want to complete my secondary school arrears from which I completed in 2017. They have since not relinquished my certifications consequent to the same.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I wake up every morning with utmost hope that I would get a casual job to do so as to provide for my family. Stepping out so as to undertake the responsibility of raising my family is a good feeling. This is the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Having joined form 1 in 2007, I ought to have completed my secondary school education four years later -typically. With me this was not the case. I dropped out of school in form 3 due to lack of fees. My parents could not afford to. I felt discouraged that my dreams were somehow shattered. Due to my desire for education, I rejoined school in 2013 starting from form 2 and completed in 2016. The school has since withheld my results slip and certificate of completion due to outstanding arrears. This is the biggest hardship I have faced in my life. But thanks to Give Directly, I am going to rewrite my story. With further help it is my desire to enroll for a course in Forestry and forestry conservation.
