What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before withdrawing the money, my wife and I sat to deliberate on how we could utilize the transfer on. Since we have been practicing crop farming for several years now, we opted to use the whole amount of $450 in tomato farming. Therefore, we prepared a one-acre piece of land and invested the transfer in it. The aim of doing this was because the season we were in favored tomato growth compared to maize crops. This decision was also derived after serious calculations which we saw will work well in our favor. We usually sell tomatoes in bulk, and one pickup of tomatoes goes for $600. If the tomatoes do well, one can sell up to two pickups of tomatoes per week which gives out $1200. As of now, I am happy to report that my tomatoes did well and in the next two weeks, I will be harvesting hoping to get a good market for them.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am immensely appreciative of the organization's enormous positive influence on our life. Receiving the transfer has significantly improved our quality of life. The ability to choose our expenditures has given us power in ways we never could have imagined. Our emotions are so grateful for the program's justice that we no longer feel bound by our poverty. We can only hope that this inspirational project will benefit many other villages in the same way that it has benefited us.
How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After achieving the goals I had established for this move, I came up with an entrepreneurial objective. I want to purchase a piece of land and construct some rental houses once I have some money. After recognizing that rental properties do not underperform in terms of revenue when they are well-managed and have a guaranteed monthly income, this idea was born. By doing this, I will have a source of revenue from the rental collection, which will allow me to provide for the daily and essential requirements of my family while also being able to take care of myself.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My spouse and I rely on agriculture as our source of income, and we have one child. When we received our second payment, we decided to use the money to invest in farming to improve our financial situation. We chose to grow tomatoes, which are known for their profitability. We were previously unable to pursue this venture due to inadequate funds. As a result, I spent $400 on farming expenses and $50 on food. I am excited about the prospect of a successful harvest in the upcoming season, thanks to the funds we received.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The thing that stood out to me the most about the cash disbursement was its unconditional nature. I had never experienced or even heard of receiving money without any strings attached. It was an incredible feeling and a stark contrast to the conditional and sometimes exploitative transactions I had encountered in the past. Equally impressive were the field officers who facilitated the project, they were not only knowledgeable but also friendly and respectful. The enrollment process was also noteworthy as it was both free and fair. There was no discrimination or favoritism, and everyone had an equal chance to participate. It was heartening to see such a transparent and equitable process.
How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My greatest aspiration is to provide my family with a comfortable home that we can call our own. Furthermore, I wish to acquire a piece of land to expand our farming ventures. To make these goals a reality, I have devised a plan to generate income through the cultivation of tomatoes. By utilizing the profits from our tomato harvest, I am confident that I can accumulate the necessary funds to achieve these dreams. It will require dedication and hard work, but I am willing to put in the effort to create a better future for my family. I believe that with patience and perseverance, I can create a prosperous life for my loved ones and build a legacy that will endure for generations to come.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Among the goals that I had written down was for me to be able to increase the farm inputs, by purchasing more seedlings and fertiliser. This is because it is one of the sectors that I depend on in earning a livelihood. Thus, I used $40 on the same. Secondly, I purchased a wire mesh worth $50 for fencing and lastly bought clothes and foodstuffs with the remaining amount. I am a farmer and a businessman, married to one wife and blessed with a child. I am so grateful for the great milestones that I have achieved. I was unable to accomplish them before due to financial constraints.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have accomplished my dream of expanding my farm within a short period. This is a big relief because I would no longer worry about where I would get money in future for our daily upkeep. I am forever grateful for the support that uplifted my life tremendously.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at the shopping centre when I received the cash transfer. Amid my errands, I heard my phone buzz with a text message. I reached out into my pocket to check out what the text entailed. On checking, I realized that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I was so excited that I called my wife who was back at home nursing our newborn baby and told her the good news. She was elated with happiness knowing this changed a lot, in our life. In a positive direction. Our lives would be transformed.

What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Farming requires finances and the market to make it flourish. Unfortunately, I have none as my family of 4 depends on the farm outputs such as maize and tomatoes for a living. It pains me that the tomatoes I sowed 3 months ago are now ready for harvesting but I have lacked the market. The prices are equally down as a crate now goes for KES 500 unlike on June 2022 when it was KES 2000. It pains me as I watch myself run into losses.
What is the happiest part of your day?
According to the customs and traditions of our Kalenjin land, when someone marries, all they expect is an addition of a family member. This is not promised as all depends on God's will. I married my wife Angeline 1 year ago and we have been living each day praying for a blessing. I was excited 2months ago when Talia, my daughter came into this world. I am thankful for my family is now complete and I have someone to run to at the end of the day.
What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
As a family, we depend on farming for a living. However, the market prices of commodities have been destroyed by brokers which is somewhat discouraging. When I receive these transfers I intend to use KES 100000 to open up a cereal (beans, maize, green peas and millet ) shop in Marigat town. Baringo county is food insecure as the climatic conditions are unfavourable but each household needs food to survive. Being business minded, I saw this as an opportunity for financial growth. I will be sourcing the cereals from Loboi and Sandai as a means to promote the local market hence also putting food on the table of the vulnerable. I will be a source of market for the community, therefore, shunning away from the brokers who have already spoilt the market.
