What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Raising school fees for my children, Calvin and Deborah, has become increasingly challenging for me. As a casual laborer earning about $4 a day, I struggle to meet this financial responsibility of my family. Providing my sons with a quality education remains a distant dream with such limited income. Most of my earnings go towards buying food and meeting basic family needs, leaving nothing for savings or investments. The recent devastation of my crops by flash floods in the April 2024 tragedy has worsened our situation, making life incredibly difficult. Now, we rely on expensive market food supplies, often facing shortages that force us to skip meals.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Putting food on the table for my family of ten is not a walk in the park. This is not limited to paying school fees for my two children Calvin and Deborah. Every time I wake up in the morning, I think of how best I can work to support and make their life enjoyable. I am happy that regardless of my struggle my children are able to pursue their education.
What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
My first born son Calvin sleeps at his friend's house because I am unable to build him a house. This is risky and not safe for him, I at times feel that my son could learn bad behaviors. This worries me a lot, I am planning to use $380 of my transfers to build him an iron sheet house. I am also planning to increase our source of income by starting livestock keeping. This project will cost me $120 for my transfers from GiveDirectly. Our clothes and bedding was also destroyed by the flash floods, I will also spend my transfers to buy clothes and bedding for my loved ones.
