How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have wanted to raise livestock since the day I got married. We never owned even one goat as a family, which worried me. I got two goats and a cow with the transfer. I am hopeful that they will start to grow in number over the upcoming year it will be a step in the right direction. My family will consequently experience an increase in the level of our assets. It will help my family supplement their meager income. Currently, my husband and I do not have a steady source of income; he works as a casual worker, and I am a peasant farmer. I will be relieved of the pressure of undertaking strenuous work to make a living.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly's approach of giving unconditional cash transfers is the most appropriate model for supporting our community. From the cash, we had the liberty to prioritize our areas of need. I spent mine on buying two goats and a cow. I was also able to support my children's education. Consequently, there is a positive change in our families. We currently do not experience much struggle like we used to experience before. GiveDirectly does so well in doing constant follow-up to gauge impact of cash on our lives. However, there is nothing GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have six children, five of whom are in school. My husband relies on low-paying casual jobs, and I am a peasant farmer. So my husband and I do not have a consistent source of income. I spent $200 on a heifer and $80 on two goats from the latest transfer. With this, I have started raising livestock, something I have always wanted to do. I consider raising livestock as a way to increase my savings for my children's future education. In addition, I spent $60 on paying my five children's school fees because they had some outstanding overdue balances. I also spent $68 on a solar system to enhance our lighting system. I am glad we now have an adequate lighting system.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was early in the morning when I left home to the lake to fetch some water leaving my phone in the house. I left it because I usually do not have early morning calls. When I returned at around 7am, I found a message on my phone. Upon checking, this was the best message I have ever received. It was the promised transfer of KES 55000.00 from GiveDirectly. Due to the happiness that engulfed me, I knelt down and prayed a thankful prayer to the Almighty God for connecting me with GiveDirectly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before GiveDirectly graced our village, I was living in a hardship condition. Sleeping on the floor was not my wish but I had no alternative due to poverty. As of now, I am a happy parent with a happy family since we are sleeping well in good bedding not as before. I can sincerely attest that, if it were not for GiveDirectly we would not be living well the way we are now. My secondary child is also happy at school since he is learning comfortable because the fee was all paid.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I withdrew the money, I first bought two beds and three mattresses. I did this because for a while my children and I have been sleeping on the floor despite having a house. I also used KES 15000.00 to pay school fees for my secondary school child who had been on and off school due to school fees. Thereafter, I took KES 5000.00 and used it in the process of getting some birth certificates for my young children and for the remaining amount, I bought some food for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means education for my family. I have a family of eight members. Two of my children are expected to join form one on May 2022. Everyone requires KES 45000. My husband and I are jobless and it is hard for us to get the school fees required. I will use KES 90000 to pay school fees for my children so that they can proceed with their learning. I will also use KES 20000 to buy five goats as an investment. This will help me get school fees in future.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Mombasa cement company brought relief food to our community last week. This is to help our Muslim brothers have their fasting season run smoothly. I got two 90kg bags of maize flour which will last for two months. The food has brought happiness in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of food is the current challenge I am facing in life. I depend on agriculture for food and we last received rain two years ago. This has caused severe famine in our area. Sometimes I only cook food for small children under five years only. The rest we go without food. It has affected me psychological .
