How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the short term I would like to start a groceries business for my wife, as well as get a bodaboda for myself. With a motorbike, I'll be able to ferry people to Ganze, Kilifi, Malindi and elsewhere. In the long term, I would generally love to give my family a better life than we are accustomed to.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Being able to pay my wife's dowry, buy food and cater for my kids education was truly life changing. GiveDirectly know how to come in and offer relief where need and when needed. All I would ask is that they continue being what they are in recipients lives and increasing both frequency and recipients of transfers
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My sister was sitting for her KCSE exams, round about the same time the transfers were coming in. Needless to say, the funds from GiveDirectly went towards off setting any expenses she might have. With the help of the funds, she was able to leave Malindi Secondary School without any stress of fees. A part of the funds also went towards paying dowry for my wife. We visited their place in Ganze, Kilifi and presented the funds, as is customary. I also got a sack of maize that I then took to my mill and milled into maize flour for sale. Being jobless and searching for funds to buy a boda boda, the funds helped in supplementing the maize we normally get from our 2 acre farm. The balance went to paying fees for our 2 kids who go to Kavandani School and need KES. 6,800 amongst them both, to cater for their PP2 and baby class tuition fees. If it had not been for GiveDirectly, we as a household would never have achieved the things we did , thanks to the funds we received.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I remember it was around 7 Am, I was at my workplace already. I heard a message tone from my phone. When I checked it out I could not believe my eyes it was a message confirming that I have receive some money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and immediately called my spouse to inform her of the good news. It was one of the happiest days of my life because I have never received such an amount of money before. I saw my dream of owning a piece of land coming to happen. I stayed for a few days and went to withdraw the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Purchasing a piece of land is the biggest difference in my daily life. I deposited KES 40,000 and the rest I will pay in an installment until I clear the balance. I live on my grandmother's land and I had always wished to own my land. When I received the money from GiveDirectly I found this an opportunity to invest in buying land. I do casual jobs and this earns me some income which I use in meeting my daily basic needs. I have a plan to talk with my employer whom I am working for now to give me some advance to top up the money. I will be so happy to live with my family in our new land. This is my biggest dream come through. I will be able to do farming and cut the daily cost that I always incur on food. I will have freedom and privacy that I do not have now. GiveDirectly has given us hope and strength to work hard.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I deposited KES 40,000 for a piece of land that I wished to own. The total cost of the land is KES 100,000. I will pay the balance in an installment form. I signed with the owner of the land. I am so happy because this is a new beginning for me to own the parcel. I spent the next KES 10,000 to pay the hospital bill for my spouse. she successfully gave birth and we are so happy. The rest of the money I spent on food and clothes for my children. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard to be much better than before.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am employed in a maize flour mill getting a salary of KES 6,000 in a month. I am a father of 2 children depending entirely on this salary. We are sleeping on the flour because I cannot budget to buy beddings for my family. My salary isn't enough to cater for the family' daily expenses. I have been thinking of opening a retail shop to increase the family earnings but I couldn't raise the capital to start the business. Receiving this money means I will open the business and leave my wife to attend it while I continue with my maize flour mill job. I believe this business will change my family's life because I will have savings from it.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I secured the maize flour mill operator job 3 months ago. This brought joy and happiness to me because I secured a job which I could atleast get something in every month unlike the previous time where I had no job at all.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Our earnings cannot sustain the daily needs of my house. (KES 6,000 per month) I have no beddings we are sleeping on the flour with a mut with my 2 children. I have a single pair of clothes and I do not attend any occasion because I dont have smart clothes to wear.
