How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been had I not received the transfer because I have been able to build a spacious house that can accommodate us comfortably. Before, I was living in a one room house and I never had any privacy. Also, my children were able to continue with my studies courtesy of GiveDirectly.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well in all aspects of their operation since they left no one in the village and they also honored their promise.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent a good amount from my second transfer to pay school fees for my three children who are in secondary schools. I settled on this since they had been sent back home and had stayed at home without going back at school for a long time. Also, I spent some amount to buy a heifer since I had sold all that I once had and used the money to pay school fees for my children. I used the remaining amount to buy food for my family.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
It had been hard for me to provide for my family on my own depending on farming and some casual jobs only. I am a single mother of four children in various schools thus meeting their needs is challenging with the scarce resources. I lived in a single grass-thatched house that has been uncomfortable for us to live in since with time it was becoming too small for my growing family and also couldn't give my children humble place to study in. The biggest difference in my daily life is the new house that I built using part of my first transfer. I am so happy that I also have a decent iron-roofed house like other people in my society that could not have happened soon if it was for GiveDirectly. I am happy that my children have a good place to study in and as a family has a good house that we can all be proud of.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I have a hardworking child who always wakes up early in the morning to do her private studies before going to school. On that day, my daughter was up as usual for her studies. She had an incoming message on my phone and checked it. She immediately woke me up in happiness to share the good news with me and I felt so happy when I saw it was true I had received money from GD.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I am a single mother of four children who always work hard to make sure that my family gets access to basic needs. I depend on farming to provide for my family and it's quite challenging since my farm products take longer time to mature and also low rainfall in our area and market price fluctuation makes farming an unreliable source of income and since I have children in secondary schools thus I majorly focus on their fee and other school requirements. I have lived in one grass-thatched hut that I usually maintain it to make it comfortable for us to live in with hopes of build another one but due to the scarce resource, I have not ben able to build one. I used KES18000 of my first transfer to build a decent, two-roomed, iron-roofed house. I took another KES20000 to settle fee arrears and outstanding balance for my children in secondary school. I am so happy that I have a good house and I have cleared my children school fees on time. I spend the remaining amount of money on my household daily basic needs, items and clothing.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that my struggles will be lessened.Being a single mother with no source of income and children in secondary school, is a real struggle.Am the sole breadwinner,as such every other need that my family has is on me.It is always very difficult to raise money to pay for their education as well as feed and clothe them. With this money,I will be able to offset their fees balances and with the remainder buy a cow to substitute income from my farm.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Throughout the day when my children are in school, I get very lonely. With all the struggles that I go through to raise them alone,I tend to think alot and wish my situation was different and this causes me a lot of stress. In the evening when they come home,my house is very lively and chatty that I even forget about my problems for a while.Being with them and seeing them happy and healthy every evening makes this the happiest part of my day
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Life as a single parent is very difficult. Most especially in these rural areas where the only source of income is farming. With the current unpredictable weather changes, farming is no longer a reliable source of income .In the past few years,I have not had a good maize yield and hence I have had to work harder in other people's farms in order to raise fees as well as food and other needs that my family has. This is the biggest hardship I have faced
