How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Even though I already have more than 10 chickens at home, I still feel that this is a new goal to establish a well-constructed coop that accommodates them all since we had been sharing the kitchen with them all along. This will as well allow me to expand and grow the hatched chicks within the coop unlike now where I keep selling them out to keep the number low. It is a beneficial project to me that I hope to see it help in raising school fees, and also settling other household bills.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
A lot if not all were perfectly done by GiveDirectly in our village. Everyone was glad that they were given a chance to spend the transfer on all that they needed and which affected them in their households the most. The monetary support was welcomed by everyone, and no one complains at all since the transformation that has been witnessed is great.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 9000 out of my first transfer on the purchase of iron sheets that were useful in the construction of a house for my son who is currently in secondary school. He has been facing lots of challenges moving to his friend's place to sleep whenever he is home and I am now glad that he has his room where he can study with no interference. I also spent part of the remaining amount on the purchase of six roles of barbed wire that I used in fencing all around my compound. I spent a total of KES 32500 on materials and labor and am glad that my farm is now well fenced and restraining livestock has been easier since then. I later spent the remaining KES 11000 on clearing the school fees for my daughter currently in the University.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy. I remember vividly like yesterday. It was around 9am. I was on my way home from the river, When I heard a ringtone message from my phone. I stopped to check it first. I couldn't believe my eyes when I checked it, it was a message indicating that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I have never received such amount of money before. I knew I would be able to buy a water tank. I continue to walk to home. At this point with a little bit higher speed to deliver the good news to the family. When I reached home I inform my family members and they also celebrated. I went to withdrew the money the same day and started looking for a place to buy a dairy cow. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has enabled us to own assets which could have taken quite some time.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a water tank for storing water for domestic use. I used to walk for quite a long distance to collect clean water. This was tiresome and time consuming. I could wake up very early in the morning to collect water for cooking tea. I could go to the river at least three times a day to collect water. This was time consuming and I had no time to work on my farm. This was so demoralizing and stressful. When it rains there was no tank to collect the water. I do casual jobs in the village and sometimes to get this jobs is so hard. The amount of money that I get through this is so small and only meant for household basic needs. I had no extra money to saved so that I can purchase a water tank. When I received the money from GiveDirectly I bought a water tank. Currently I no longer walk for that long distance like before. I have time to bond with my family and also to work on my farm. My children have access to clean water. We are no longer exposed to water related diseases. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 2,150 of the first transfer on purchasing a Solar lamp for lighting up the house. I bought a smart phone at a cost of KES 12,000 for my daughter who joined university this year. This helps do her assignment in school. I bought a water tank at a cost of KES 18,000. This is for storing water for domestic use. I used to walk for a long distance to collect clean water. This has saved me time to do other chores at home. Finally I bought a sofa set seat, food and clothes for my family members. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
To me, receiving this money means I will be able to establish a better incoming generating activity at home. I am planning to spend KES80000 to invest in farming. I wish to use KES45000 to put up a chicken poultry farming in my compound since with this I will be able to collect eggs that I will use for household consumption and sales for income. In addition, I will use KES35000 to buy a dairy cow to add to my herd. Having more cattle in my farm means more milk production thus a higher income. With this higher income from farming, I will be able to meet my household's daily needs and children's education. We receive low rainfall in our area hence getting clean water is sometimes a hard task here. When I receive my cash transfer, I will use KES18000 to buy a 2300 litre water tank thus I will be able to collect clean rainwater from my iron roof and this will ensure I have clean water for my domestic use at my doorstep. I wish to spend another KES12000 to buy furniture and other household basic needs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I feel so happy every time I am with my family. Evening is the happiest part of my day since this is the time I am back home from my casual job. This is the time I am with my family ready to share our meals as we bond together.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of resources is the biggest hardship I have faced in my life. I am a casual laborer at a nearby dispensary and my monthly pay there is too little to settle my household needs and educate my children.
