The new goal that I have now is to start a business selling second-hand clothes. This is what I have always wished to start but I do not have the capital. We have started group savings in the village and when I get my money I will start this business. I am looking forward to starting this and making it my main source of income.

The training that GiveDirectly does is so good in that when people received the transfer they spent it well. Most of the people who lived in grass thatched houses have built better and decent houses. Some have started a business and this has enabled them to earn some income to improve their standard of living. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.

I spend all the second transfers on purchasing land. We have a group in the village where we save some amount of money. When it was my turn to get the money I top up with the transfer from GiveDirectly and I was able to buy land worth KES 180,000. I am so happy because this has been my dream all along to own a bigger land. We lived on a small piece of land and I was not in a position to do any farming. This was a challenge since we would buy maize throughout the season. I depend on casual jobs and small businesses selling fruits. The amount of money that I get through this is so small and it is only for food and the basic needs of the family. I would save some amount in the group that we started. Currently, I do farming and this had given me hope in that I know I will get enough food to feed my family and cut the daily cost of buying. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.

It was 6 pm and I was at home cleaning the cowshed. I had left my phone in the house. I then thought of making a call to my husband so that he could buy for us a few items in town before coming home. I went to get my phone and just when I was about to make the call I saw that I had a new SMS. I decided to open it first and to my surprise, it was an SMS saying that we had received the promised transfer of KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I was so happy on seeing this wonderful news and I immediately informed my husband of the good news. He was so happy on hearing this and we thanked God for the blessing.

The biggest difference that the transfer has brought into our lives is that we have been able to increase the size of land that we own. I now have somewhere to do farming where I can grow vegetables. I hence will no longer have to incur the cost of buying them.

We spent most of the recent transfer money on buying a piece of land. We bought a point of an acre at KES 40000. We bought the land because the one that we are living in is very small, it is also a point of an acre. We hence do not usually have somewhere to till. We plan to meanwhile use the piece of land bought for farming but in the future, we would like to settle there and rear some cows. We also bought a bag of maize for our consumption at KES 3000 and with the remaining amount of money, we used it in buying a few household items that were missing like the utensils. Buying the piece of land has always been our wish but we did not have the money to do so. My husband usually does the motorcycle taxi business while for me I at times engage in casual jobs when they are available. The money that he makes most of it usually goes to the purchase of food for our family of four and some of it he uses in paying for the merry-go-round contributions in the self-help groups that he has joined. We are thus grateful to GiveDirectly for enabling us to achieve our dream.
