How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been had I not received the transfer. This is because I have been able to build my own house something I had never thought that I would achieve this soon. Due to this, I am very glad and thankful to God for leading GiveDirectly to me at the time of need.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by giving out financial aid and I do not see anything that they do not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my transfer, I spent KES 15,000 to pay school fees for my children. I settled on this so that they would not be sent back home as I had already been given a letter informing me that they would be sent back home in the next one week if their fees had not been cleared. Also, I spent KES 16000 to purchase three sets of seats and beddings. I used the remaining amount on food and clothes for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 1:30 pm and I was at home having lunch with my child when I received the M-Pesa message on my phone. I was filled with lots of happiness after seeing this. I informed my child of the good news and he was so excited too to hear this. We celebrated together and for a while, we forgot that we were having lunch. Deep inside me, I knew that my dreams were now going to be fulfilled. I thanked God for this because I had no hopes that I will ever be able to achieve them.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
This transfer has brought a big difference in my life and that of my family. I have been having money issues ever since the Coronavirus pandemic hit our country and I had to close down my business. I, therefore, had no idea where I was going to get the money and I had a lot of worries. I especially kept wondering where I was going to get the money to pay for my child’s school fees and buy his school items. I thank GiveDirectly because they came through for me at a difficult time. My child has hence been able to go to school and I no longer have stress because I know he will be able to study well without interference of being sent away due to school fees arrears. Having bought the piece of land that I have always desired, my child and I will from hence be able to live in peace away from any family wrangles.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The transfer from GiveDirectly has helped me in a big way that I had never imagined. I bought a piece of land that is 0.1 acres. With the remaining amount, I used it in paying for my child’s school fees and I also bought some school items for him when he was going back to school. I did not imagine that I will be able to do the above because I did not have the money. I had a business of selling second-hand clothes but I had to close it down after the Coronavirus pandemic hit our country. The customers were no longer buying the clothes because they were of the fear that they will contract the virus. I had therefore to look for something else to do. I got a casual job of selling d-light solar lamps where I had to move from house to house selling them. This job has too had a fair share of its challenges. The little money that I have thus been getting from it has only been enough to buy food and other necessities. The reason why I have always wanted to have my piece of land is that there has been a misunderstanding between me and my brothers because some of them do not want me staying in our parent’s house. My child and I have therefore not been having any peace of mind. I appreciate GiveDirectly for making this possible for me.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
It's means I will be able to buy a piece of Land for myself, currently I am leaving at my parents house since when they passed on in 2014. I have children and I could like them to have a home because my brother can come and claim the family property including the house and land that we live in now
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of the day is in the evening when the day as ended well with my family having for to eat and I have achieved my set target for the sales whereby I am able to make a small saving from my work.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The hardest part is having to struggle every day in order to provide Basic needs to my family, recently I got a job as sales person for a solar dealer whereby they pay me per item sold that is sh 500 per one item sold. On a good week I make sh 3000 and on a bad week I get nothing.so I struggle to balance the two so that my children will not go ungry.
