How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Right now, because I am in the last semester my focus is on the completion of my University education. Thereafter, I will start looking for a job to sustain my kids.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly barazas was very informative. For instance, I learned that GiveDirectly transfers are unconditional and this means it's is not a loan that should be refunded and I can use it according to my needs. During enrollment, GiveDirectly officers were keen enough to notice imposters and for sure they were not enrolled.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a University student and a single mum of two. Before GiveDirectly came, I would rely on Education loans and community contributions to pay my university fees and feed my family as well. This was quite a struggle because this led to the accumulation of school fees arrears. But when the first transfers came in I cleared my University arrears and I am grateful. Secondly, I bought my first dairy cow in April last year and I have been getting five liters a day. I normally sell half of it for household expenses and payment of my kid's fees but this couldn't suffice. So when the second transfer came, I saw this as a good opportunity of buying another dairy cow to increase my family's income. I, therefore, spent KES 41,000 on a high-quality dairy cow which is now due and I am grateful. Thirdly, One of my kids has also been suffering from severe eye problems. So when the second five directly transfers I saw this as an opportunity to get him spectacles to aid eyesight because I couldn't afford them before. I, therefore, spent KES 6500 on a pair of spectacles and I can't be happier. Lastly, in terms of food, we normally rely on maize and beans farming. But in the recent past farming has proved quite unreliable. This is because of long severe droughts and outbreaks of the maize disease which led to low harvest hence food insecurity. But when GiveDirectly came, I bought a bag of maize for my family at KES2400 and the rest on clothing.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was already in school when I received a message notification that morning and could not realize immediately that it was from GiveDirectly since I heard the alert in the middle of a lesson. As soon as the lesson ended, I had to check it up and what greeted my eyes was a huge figure in a Mpesa message. I immediately knew it was from GiveDirectly as I celebrated with a lot of excitement. I thanked God that the struggle I had on clearing my child's school fees payment and mine had come to an end as that was a priority in my to-do list.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the cleared school fees that freed me of the burden I had been struggling with over the past few months. Providing for my children, attending my classes every day, and also working on the casual labor to raise school fees in my free time had been so straining that receiving this transfer gave me a chance to rest and at least concentrate in class and have a good time with my two kids. I am grateful for this support and hope to do a lot more with the second transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had huge arrears in college that I needed to clear before examination time as I could not be allowed to sit for any paper before paying at least 75% of the total amount. On receiving my first transfer, I had to clear all the pending payments of KES26000. This was a relief to me as I had been studying with a lot of worries since I was not sure whether I will be allowed to sit for my examinations at the end. I also had to settle tuition fees for my son in primary school and bought him a new pair of eye lenses at KES8000 since he had been struggling with impaired vision. He feels better now as he tries to adjust to the use of reading glasses. With the remaining amount, I purchased a sack of maize that we are still using with my family of three, purchased clothing for my children and a pair for me, and saved the remaining amount to serve emergencies and replenish the food baskets as we anticipate the second transfer.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am the last born in a family of seven. I have two brothers whom we live with in the same compound. We did not get along with their wives and I had to build a structure so that I can move away from home. Receiving this money, I intend to expand my house with KES 30000 of the transfer because the one I am in is small. I will also buy a cow with KES 30000 of the transfer to buy a cow that will provide my two children and I milk and the rest use to clear my school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I wake up everyday, prepare my son for school and also leave for my classes at Chebunyo Technical Institute. The happiest part of my day is in the evening when I come home and see my children.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship that I have faced is financial constraints. I do not have a job and rely on my casual jobs or my sisters to support me financially. I have a child with glaucoma and has to attend medical check up every month. This is expensive since he has had six surgeries on his right eye and they are costly.
