How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, I have a new goal of buying livestock for keeping. After receiving my second transfer, my husband and I decided to clear on a piece of land that we had paid for and which we had not cleared. The only cow that we owned had earlier been sold topay school fees for our daughter who recently joined secondary school. Livestock are a very important asset especially in my community since it is the main economic activity that really helps in times of need. I hope to accumulate enough savings from my small restaurant business and be able to accomplish this goal soon.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my own opinion, GiveDirectly did very well by giving us money without conditions. The fact that there were no conditions on how we could spend the money gave us the freedom and liberty to choose how best we could spend the money. A good example is me here who made a decision to purchase a piece of land. I have seen other people opt for other things but one thing is clear about all of them-it is that they are contented with whatever they chose to spend the money on and they are all happier than they were before receiving the transfers.GiveDirectly should simply keep up the good work they are doing.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We used KES 35000 to fully pay for a piece of land that we had boughton credit. I saw this as an opportunity to clear for it since it is very hard for us with the nature of income generating activities that we engage in to accumulate such huge sums of money. We used another KES 10000 to pay school fees for my daughter who recently started her secondary education and used the remaining amount of KES 10000 to buy food clothes and other basic household needs for our family. We feel so happy that GiveDirectly came in handy to help us accomplish all these within a very short time and saved us from the argony of overstaying in debts and the stress that comes with it. We are happy that our 9 children will finally find a more spacious place to stay in and their future is brighter than it has ever been. We hope thatthe works of our hands-hotel business for me and motorcycle operation for my husband shall see us achieve even much more bigger things in the near future but we are so grateful to GiveDirectly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 11 a.m. when I received a message that confirmed the receipt of my first transfer. With my husband in a small food joint that I had been running, we couldn't hold our joy but celebrated openly with the belief that everyone around knew and had the same experience when they received the same message too. We had all plans in place and could not wait but withdrew the money around 4 p.m. with the fear of the Mpesa shops filling up on the following day. We took this step of collecting the transfer since we needed to spend on all that we had planned for the next day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the presence of a dairy cow that has rejuvenated my hope of enjoying enough supply of milk in the household after a long time of spending to obtain at least a liter every day. I am grateful that the dairy cow I obtained looks strong and healthy, giving us confidence that witing a few months coming, we will be getting enough milk to use in the household and sell the surplus to the neighborhood.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
In our list of expenditures, buying a cow was at the top as we needed a stop to the huge spending on buying milk that had been happening in our household for a long time. I spent the first KES35000 on obtaining a 5months in-calf cow that we are looking forward to seeing calf down soon. I hope that my family will soon stop buying milk and enjoy enough supply of milk both for home use and surplus for sale as an income source. I also spent KES 20000 on settling school fees arrears for my children who had been experiencing a lot of disturbances being sent home when we had no money to pay them in time. With the remaining amount, I spent on obtaining at least a pair each for my seven children. I am grateful that all that we had planned to spend the first transfer on came to pass.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I moved to my current piece of land a year ago since my original farm was dry and very unproductive. Receiving this money will allow me to settle on well and improve my livelihood. I plan to fence off the farm, partition it into sections so that when I purchase a dairy cow, it's well taken care of. This will cost me KES 60000. For the rest of the amount, I will pay school fees for my daughter in secondary school.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. At this time I'm back from my hotel business. Serving customers all day is very tiresome. In the evenings I get to rest as I spend time with my family which makes me happy
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of finances has been the biggest hardship. I moved from my previous farm a year ago because it was very dry and unproductive. For many years we lived there with my family I really struggled to meet my family's needs. Right now I'm still adapting to the new area as we find ways of earning income.
