How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a new goal which has been to raise enough money and save so that I can be able to pay fees for my children once they transition to secondary schools. I never got the chance to go to school and I am praying to God to see me through so that I can achieve the dream. I am positive that once they will all graduate, they will have the opportunity to seek good jobs that will not only be of help to them but to their generations as well.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a good job by enrolling all the households in my village. The officers did not discriminate against anyone regardless of tribe, religion or even marital status. To add to the enrolment was voluntary and fair which stood out according to me. I did not see anything that they did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying iron sheets, doors, building poles, and the labour charges at a total of KES 25000. I had intended to finish building my house which was still under construction. The initial house was in a poor state and it would collapse at any time. Also, it was very small to accommodate my two children. They have therefore been sleeping at their grandmother's house which was a bit of a challenge as well since her house was very far from the village we lived in. I am now a proud single father because I will be sheltering will all my family members under one roof. Additionally, I cleared the arrears of KES 5000 for my two children in grades three and four respectively. They are now studying comfortably without any disturbances. Also, I bought livestock ( two goats, three ducks and a chicken) which cost around KES 10000. They will now serve as reliable assets that I can readily lean on in case of any financial constraints. With the remaining amount, I bought food for my family and other household needs that I was lacking.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I am a single parent of two children, I depend mainly on casual activities like preparing and selling charcoal. It was around 4 p.m when I had completed all my work of the day. My phone was on charge the whole day, so I decided to go to our nearest shops where it was charging. After switching it on, I was so surprised and happy to see the message indicating that I had received the transfer. I was very sure that my life will never be the same because I had planned to use it wisely.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Living in a decent house is the biggest difference in my daily life. Previously, I was living in a very small that could not fully accommodate all my commodities and my family members. I am very grateful for the aid .
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For many years, I desired to own a decent house for my family. This is because the house that I owned previously was very small to fully accommodate all my commodities and my family members. I spent KES 40,000 to construct a decent two-roomed iron-roofed house. Currently, I am very pleased that I reside in a nice house something that has improved my esteem. With the remaining amount, I used KES 4000 to clear the fee arrears for my two children who are still in primary school. It was more than two terms since I paid their fees. My kids are no longer sent home for school fees. I also bought enough food stock for the family and I am not worried about feeding them.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a family of three members. We are all living in one-bedroom house. I have a son and a daughter. I separated with my wife five years ago. Since then, I have been struggling to raise the family alone. I am a casual laborer earning approximately KES 5000 per month. This is not enough to meet the family needs. The house I have does not have privacy. I will use KES 70000 to build a two-bedroom house for the family. I will also use KES 40000 to marry another wife. She will bring a companion to the family. I am happy that Givedirectly money will improve my living standard.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My work is to make charcoal and sell at Migumomiri center. The price per bag has been KES 300 year in year out. In January 2022, the price per bag raised to KES 600. The new price has brought happiness in my life because I will be making a lot of money when I sell my charcoal.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am living with my two children and they are still young that they cannot cook food for themselves. Always I have to be at home to wash and cook food for them. I cannot work far away from home. Lack of a wife to stay with my children when I am away is the challenge I am facing in life.
