I want to buy goats, let them breed, and expand the herd so that I can sell them anytime to pay the school fees for my children and keep them in school. Having livestock will relieve me of the stress I get when my students miss classes due to unpaid balances. I will be happy if I bought at least ten goats by the end of the year.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
My favorite aspect of GiveDirectly is the way their staff conducts themselves. They had very courteous and respectful staff who were in charge of enrollment and registration. This made it easier for us to put our faith in them and provide them with crucial information. I implore the organization to continue the good work of training its employees to offer the villagers excellent service.

Since the beginning of the drought three years ago, life in the village has been a living hell. In order to use this water for my own home, I am required to walk more than 60 kilometers over rough terrain. Some of the water pans we used to get our water are drying up, which is bad news for the future. I spent $10 on a 110-liter water tank when I got my transfer so I could store water. Along with the water tank, I also bought food for my family. I take care of my own livestock while my husband works as a watchman and makes a pitiful living. My family's food purchases accounted for a sizable chunk of my first transfer. My husband supports our family alone through his work as a gardener in a private home in Mombasa town. What does receiving this money mean to you?
I shifted focus from doing crop farming to goat rearing. I have not reached to the point I want, and for that reason, I will spend this money to buy more goats; 3,000 KES is enough to buy a goat. Crop farming has not been dependable due to little rainfall but livestock farming does better in this region. They have helped me a lot in paying school fees and settling basic needs for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Every end of the month when I receive money from my husband, I ensure that I have a special meal with my children. Sometimes he joins us. These are the moments that create happiness in my life. This has been the norm every month since the beginning of the year.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have five children in school and getting money for their education has been giving me sleepless nights lately. One of them has been sent home because of school fees balance. My spouse is a house help in town and sends home between 2,000 to 3,000 KES at the end of the month. This is barely enough given the many needs. I am just a farmer at home without a consistent income because farming with persistent drought is unreliable.
