How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming years and beyond, I have two main goals that I am determined to accomplish. Firstly, I aim to build a one-bedroom home, providing sufficient space for myself, my children, and any potential visitors. This is essential for our comfort and well-being, and it would create a more stable living environment for my family.
Secondly, I aspire to purchase a cow. Beyond the benefits of having a steady supply of milk for my family, I see the cow as an investment. Selling the surplus milk will contribute to my children's school fees, ensuring they have access to education. This dual-purpose approach aligns with my desire to improve our living conditions and secure a better future for my children through education. These goals represent important steps towards a more comfortable and sustainable life for my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is doing well in allowing individuals to make their own decisions about how to use the funds they receive. The flexibility provided empowers recipients to address their unique needs and priorities. Personally, I find this approach effective and respectful, recognizing the diverse circumstances and goals of those receiving support.
As for recommendations, I have none to offer. I appreciate the autonomy GiveDirectly provides, allowing each person to determine the best use of the funds based on their specific circumstances. This approach fosters a sense of responsibility and self-determination, ultimately contributing to the success of the program.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I recently received $450 from GiveDirectly, and I made thoughtful choices on how to use it for the well-being of my family. With six of my nine kids attending school, I allocated $30 to purchase reading materials such as books and uniforms, ensuring that all of them have the necessary resources for their education. This investment in their education has had a positive impact on their mindset, and I am confident that it will contribute to improved academic performance.
In the spirit of the festive season, I spent $60 to buy new clothes for my kids. This was a special occasion as they had never worn such clothes before. The joy and excitement this brought to my family were truly heartwarming. I set aside $50 to celebrate the circumcision of one of my boys. We held a meaningful event at home with our neighbors, creating a memorable and cherished experience for all involved.
Recognizing the importance of basic needs, I allocated $40 to buy food for my family, ensuring that we have ample supplies for our daily sustenance. Finally, I used a portion of the funds to purchase essential household items, contributing to the overall improvement of our living conditions. In summary, the careful allocation of the recent transfers has positively impacted my family's education, clothing, celebrations, and daily necessities, making a meaningful difference in our lives.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Looking ahead to the coming year and beyond, my strategic focus is on expanding my investment in livestock. The rationale behind this decision stems from the financial strain caused by consistently purchasing packed milk from nearby shops. To alleviate this burden, I plan to invest in a cow, foreseeing it as a sustainable source for future milk production. Beyond personal consumption, the surplus milk could potentially be sold, providing a dual benefit of financial returns. Additionally, the prospect of breeding and selling the offspring presents an opportunity to generate income to cover various expenses, including school fees for my children and other essential bills. This investment in livestock not only addresses immediate financial challenges but also lays the foundation for a more self-sufficient and economically viable future.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly, in my perspective, is making an invaluable contribution to our village, accomplishing positive changes that would have been unattainable without their intervention. The transformation we've witnessed fulfills the long-standing hopes of the community. The decision by the organization to provide cash support has proven to be the most effective, addressing a myriad of problems from one household to another. This approach has empowered families to make decisions collaboratively and prioritize pressing needs. The smoothness of the process from its initiation to the present day has been commendable, and in my opinion, there is no need for any changes. As we anticipate the final transfer and look toward the future, we hope to witness continued progress not only in our village but also in others who may benefit from GiveDirectly's impactful initiatives.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Providing for my family of nine, including accommodation, has been a significant challenge. With the second transfer from GiveDirectly, I prioritized improving my son's living conditions. I invested $65 in five iron sheets to construct a new, more secure house for him, replacing the old structure with a tattered grass roof. Additionally, I bought a $43 sack of maize that continues to sustain us. Formerly relying on casual labor and charcoal burning, the support has been crucial. Operating a mobile salon has also been beneficial. Allocating $54 for household goods, including cooking oil, tea leaves, sugar, and toiletries, enhanced our daily living. Spending $25 on five pairs of shoes brought joy to my children. Clearing a $70 debt and investing $23 in buying chickens are steps toward a more stable financial future, aiming to sell eggs for school fees. Spending $20 on transportation brought five goats safely home. GiveDirectly has significantly transformed our living conditions, and we're grateful for the positive changes it has brought to our family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The memory of receiving my GiveDirectly transfer is deeply ingrained in my mind. At the shopping center, I received a text notification confirming the money had been sent, and an overwhelming wave of happiness and excitement washed over me. The prospect of being able to pursue my dreams filled me with anticipation, and without delay, I started planning and strategizing how to make the best use of the funds. This moment marked a turning point in my life, and I was resolute in using the money wisely to secure a better future for myself and my family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The financial assistance I received has brought about the most significant change in my daily life, I was able easily purchase foodstuffs and essential household items, something that was once beyond my reach due to financial constraints. The gift I received has truly transformed my life, and I will forever be grateful for this life-changing opportunity.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving my initial transfer, my top priority was to provide for my children's basic needs and purchase essential foodstuffs, especially since we had lost everything in a house fire before. My husband and I rely on casual jobs to make a living, which made it difficult to afford these necessities. The lack of a stable income had hindered any progress, but the transfer from GiveDirectly changed everything. I spent approximately $144 to buy much-needed food supplies. Then, I used $21 to invest in seats for our home and another $15 for my child's school fees, including the cost of books. The financial support we received has significantly improved our standard of living, and I am truly grateful for the positive impact it has had on our lives.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
My plan for the transfers is to pur Hase food, clothing and past fees arrears for my children who are ni Sabor primary school. I intend to spend $180 of the transfers on this. For the second transfers I intend to build a house for my children since we are living in a very small house which sometimes is congested. This has great effects on us since there is less privacy. Additionally I intend to build a kitchen with the transfers since at the moment I cook outside. I intend to spend $45 to accomplish this. For the third transfers I intend to purchase 3 goats at $450 each and chicken at about $30 of the transfers. This will be an investment for me and my family into the future. For the remaining transfers I intend to save.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiness over the past 6 months came from the house we live in today. My house was raced down by fire in 2014 and since then we have been renting a house in the nearby center. However I'm January this year my husband and I managed to get some money to build our new home which delighted me greatly.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The challenge I'm facing currently is the lack of food. This has been made worse by the lack of rain in our village which has forced us to skip one meal or go without food entirely. Since I have 7 children to feed this is really stressful and challenging which makes my life hard.
