How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have passion in selling ladies outfits. In the coming year and beyond, I am planning to expand my business in all the nearby markets so as to attract high profits. I will also be employing workers to take care of the businesses as it will be overwhelming due to high demand. I am planning to have a longer term solution for the kids school fees, I will therefore add more livestock like chicken and goats for sale for the kids school fees.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, what GiveDirectly does well in this program is that we receive the transfers in lumpsum amounts. This helps in planning as one is in a position to do something huge as compared to when the transfers are given in small instalments. Another thing that GiveDirectly does well is that the unlearned recipients are taught how to use mpesa. This has reduced the number of theft cases in the community as most of us managed to change our pins to a more secure code. What needs to be done differently is enrolling all the individuals in the household to avoid household conflict. During enrollment, those individuals who did not have responsibilities by then were left out of the program yet these are the same people who steal from their old and vulnerable parents. Another thing that needs to be done differently is enrolling all the communities in a specific village for uniformity purposes and this will prevent too many complaints coming from the communities that are left out during the registration to the programs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used the transfers to pay for school fees of my kids who are in secondary school. Before the transfers my children were in and out of the school and they almost dropped out of school due to lack of school fees. I used kshs 15,000 to clear their fees arrears that have accumulated for the last one year. I also started a new business of selling ladies clothes for kshs 20,000 in a nearby market, so far the business is doing so well and I get enough profits to cater for food for my family of five. I never had a cow before, I used kshs 15,000 to buy a female cow for milk production for my family consumption. I thank Give Directly for the transfers.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer, I was busy preparing breakfast for my family. Then suddenly I heard my phone ringing, Upon checking I realised that I had received a sum of KES 55,000 from Segovia technology. I was overwhelmed with joy and happiness because this meant that I would be able to accomplish the goals that I had. of owning a dairy cow. I then informed my husband who was indeed thankful and happy and finally we embarked on planning how we would utilise the money. We are indeed grateful for the support that lifted our living standard amazingly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life today is that I was able to purchase a dairy cow with the unconditional transfer. And at the same time, I initiated a goat rearing project. I was unable to realise the goal due to financial constraints. I am now able to save up money that I used to spend on milk daily hence I am contented that I was able to achieve my dream in a short period, I am so thankful for the support that uplifted our lives amazingly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The transfer from GiveDirectly came at the time when I had the urge of starting a dairy farming and a goat rearing project. I knew that I would be able to kickstart a goat rearing project with my initial transfer. This has been my desire for a while now but I was unable to realise it due to financial constraints. I work at the county councils, and I am married and blessed with a child. Therefore upon the receipt of my initial transfer, I used KES 20,000 in implementing the goat project. I then used KES 25,000 to purchase a dairy cow, Lastly, I used the remaining amount on clothes and foodstuffs. I am so happy and grateful that I was able to accomplish a lot in a short period.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
We got married a year ago and we are blessed with a one year old baby boy. We do not have a cow to provide milk for our use, we buy from the neighbor at KES 80 for the 2 liters we need for our daily consumption. We have all along desired to purchase a dairy cow but we have not been able to, we bought the land we are occupying and we just finished building the houses, it depleted all our resources. Sometimes we do not get enough milk and the child cries a lot and this bothers us. We plan to buy a dairy cow worth KES 25000. We will use the rest of the money to establish a shop at Chebunyo market.
What is the happiest part of your day?
We started a poultry project last year August and it did so well. We had a flock of 30 and all were laying eggs. Every week we were getting up to KES 1500 from the sale of the eggs and it helped us a lot to meet our daily needs. This brought a lot of joy to our family as we enjoyed a quality life because we could afford it. Unfortunately, some of them died recently because of the outbreak of Newcastle disease.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Our boy recently fell ill, he has not recovered well. He was diagnosed with malaria. It was a painful experience to see the child writhing in pain. He has been having health problems for sometime and this has caused us sleepless nights.
