How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Prior to receiving this transfer from GD, my family of eight lived in a small house that would flood when it rained. It was heartbreaking for me to watch my children endure many cold nights, but I didn't have the ability to change this because I didn't have enough money. The money I earned from selling charcoal was too little to enable me to build a house. Once I received the transfer from GD, I was able to build a better house. My family can now sleep warmly and comfortably. We also acquired a dairy cow. We use some of the milk we get at home and sell the surplus to earn money. Life is so much better now. Thanks GD!
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
It's not an easy task to successfully change the lives of so many people, but GiveDirectly has been able to do so. Our village is prone to famine, but this time many people will not suffer like before because they've acquired livestock and started businesses. They can now provide food for their families. In my opinion, GiveDirectly does everything well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
It's important to me that my family has decent shelter. This had been impossible to achieve however, because I did not have enough money to build a good house for us. I was pleased to receive this transfer from GD. I was able to spend KES 33,150 on materials such as timber and iron sheets, and labour for construction. Because the bed I had was broken, I spent KES 8,000 to buy a new one, so I can sleep comfortably. I also bought a dairy cow worth KES 12,000 that can supply us with milk for use at home and for sale.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
My phone had been off for quite some days because of a power outage in my region. I later switched on after charging it and a message popped. I decided to check what the message was all about. I did not believe my eyes after realizing that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and I even started planning how best I could utilize the money. I will always be thankful for this organization for making my morning and transforming my life positively.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now sleep under a very decent spacious house. Initially, I used to shelter in a small house was had a leaky roof and every rainy season, it was so hectic and I never wish anyone to face what I went through. My spouse solely depended on casual jobs earning KES 150 in a day which was too little to fend for the family's needs. Therefore constructing a better house was just a dream for us. Some of my children had even opted to say at their grandmother's house because of the situation. I am now happy and thank GiveDirectly for restoring the lost hope in our lives. In addition to that, I am now sleeping comfortably in a decent bed and I no longer complain of back pain and being ttacked by some jiggers and some other harmful insects.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some bedding which includes a wooden bed and mattress at a total of KES 11300. Previously I was using some old sacks and some old clothes and beddings and I had lots of discomforts plus pains every morning. Also, I bought building materials like, iron sheets, building poles, threads, nails, and timber. I bought all these whoth the aim of constructing a new house becasue the initial was almost collapsing due to the weak walls and old roof. I later cleared school fees for my four children who are in primary schools and they are now studying peacefully. With the remaining cash transfers, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I can build a new house which is spacious and comfortable. I have always wanted a house but lack of finances has been a hindrance. My current house is one room attached to a small kitchen. I have six children and this means that I have no privacy. My daughter is turning 18 and we all sleep together in one room. I have six children. The walls are also worn out and the roof leaks during the rainy season. We also persevere smoke from the kitchen which makes us uncomfortable. I have budgeted 500 USD for building a one bedroom house made of new iron sheets.
What is the happiest part of your day?
First thing in the morning is doing the household chores before I embark on farm work. During the rainy season like this,I spend the better part of my day in my farm. I come back home and prepare a meal for my children at around 5pm. The happiest part of my day is in the evening when I have all my children at home. I take this opportunity to chat and encourage them to work hard in school.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
On many occasions, I wake up in the morning not knowing what my children will eat. I have six children and it has been a big challenge getting food for them. I depend on my farm to get food but with the prolonged droughts every now and then, it has been difficult getting good yields. This has forced my spouse to move to the urban area to look for casual jobs which again pay as little as 3 USD in a day and are sometimes not available. This means that we sometimes skip meals. Getting the basic needs and moreso food has therefore been my biggest hardship.
