How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming years and beyond, my strategy will involve saving a larger portion of the profits from my tomato farming endeavors. Furthermore, I have intentions to sell a portion of the goats that I've invested in. This strategic move is aimed at accumulating sufficient funds that will enable me to purchase a fertile acre of land, ideally located near a river. This choice of land will facilitate irrigation practices, which are crucial for optimizing crop yield. Owning the land will also provide me with the freedom to engage in farming without the constraints of leasing and the associated expenses, as well as the restrictions imposed by a landowner on usage.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What stands out for me regarding GiveDirectly is their practice of directly transferring funds to the recipients' personal accounts. This direct approach eliminates the involvement of third parties and the need for recipients to go through intermediaries to receive the promised assistance. This not only enhances the security of the process but also ensures the privacy and confidentiality of the recipients' information.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Recognizing the favorable climatic conditions for goat rearing in our area, leading to rapid multiplication and consistent market demand, I strategically invested $350 to acquire ten additional goats, adding to the six I previously obtained through a prior transfer. My intention for them is to reproduce over time, potentially leading to profitable sales that can contribute to my larger goal of acquiring a more suitable parcel of land. Currently, the land I possess lacks productivity due to its distance from the river, hampering irrigation efforts that are vital in our region due to limited rainfall. I used the remaining amount to lease a one-acre land for cultivating tomatoes, a venture I have experience with and know to be lucrative. I do this for commercial purposes to generate sustainable income and enhance the well-being of my family and support future plans.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
With my venture into goat farming, the current piece of land that I currently own is not big enough to accommodate this practice. I therefore hope to buy an extra acre of land around my home which will ensure that the goats have a field to graze. I also hope to improve my financial stability and both the farming and my wife's business will hopefully help me achieve this.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I loved that the transfers are sent straight to the recipients personal Mpesa account as compared to other organisations that we hear about where one has to go get anything promised from a third party. this ensures safety and confidentiality. Givedirectly aslo keeps their word on when to receive the transfers as they are prompt, therefore any plans made depending on the transfers goes accordingly. Everything in my opinion was well done. My only wish is that if Givedirectly could come back to our villages to check on how we are progressing after say two years and if possible give additional funds.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For about $300, I purchased six goats to raise. Despite the arid conditions here, goats does well, and that's why I choose to invest in them. This, I am confident, will eventually procreate, so I could possibly sell them for profit in the future. Proceeds from this will boost my plan of acquiring a piece of land. I also contributed $100 to my wife's second hand clothes business. I had invested some amount of   the first transfer that I had received, and the effect were pretty impressive, which inspired me to contribute more for the business.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Around 4:00 p.m., I received a message from GiveDirectly confirming receipt of the first transfer. I couldn't understand it because it had the name Segovia but not the expected GiveDirectly. The amount indicated provided a hint, and after checking with other neighbors, I was confident that I had received something from GiveDirectly. Because I was working on my farm, I returned home later in the evening to inform my spouse, who was alone at home.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Having such a large sum of money for the first time allowed us to invest heavily in our household for the first time in both livestock and clothing businesses. I am a contractor, and whenever I am unable to find work because I rely on casual labor in the community, my wife purchases food with the proceeds from her business.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used $100 of my first transfer to purchase two. Goats. We live in a drought-prone area where irrigation facilitates farming, and raising goats is a better plan that can be implemented cheaply. I am currently living on my friend's property because I am unable to purchase my own. With the livestock project I'm currently launching, I hope to sell the goats after they've been bred in order to purchase some land. I spent $80 to help my spouse's clothing business grow. She's been selling them around the village, and the profits have helped me buy household goods with the money I have earned from my construction work. I also spent the remaining $20 on food for my current two-person family.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Receiving this money means peace of mind for my family of six. After being displaced by floods two years ago, we have been living in borrowed temporary shelters. It saddens me to see that we are not settled as it limits our ability to invest in livestock keeping which is the main economic activity in this area. We earn a total of KES 200 per day from doing casual jobs which is hardly enough to meet all my family's basic needs of food, shelter and clothing. I am excited that this transfers will help me own half an acre of land at a cost of KES 100,000. I will then build a house and relocate my family. Givedirectly will change our lives and we shall be able to live well thereafter.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I desire for good health for my family and I am thankful to God for allowing me to see better days. We do not take it for granted that we are alive because it gives us another opportunity to change our lives and that of others. That is what brings me happiness as I am able to fend for my family without incurring any costs on hospital visits.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Two years ago, we were displaced by floods and this forced us to borrow a house to live. We are not comfortable because it limits us from raising livestock which is the main economic activity here. My husband and I were forced to open up a second- hand clothes business which earns very little money just enough to buy food for my family. We cannot save or even borrow loan to purchase land and this stresses us up. If we owned a piece of land and a house, we could be alot happier than now.
