How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The biggest difference in my life is that I am financially stable now. I might not be having much as expected to be financially stable but for me, I feel I am stable. Right now I am able to meet my family needs well and in time with fewer struggles because of the transfers. This is a big difference being that I used to struggle to raise money for my needs since I have been relying on a small income from conductor business where I am employed. The little I have been getting has not been much and I have witnessed an improved income because the little I used to pay rent and buy with, I use on savings. I don't use everything as it was the case before the transfers.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My current goal for the transfers is to pay rent and start a shoe business. Rent has been an issue for me and I struggle to raise money in time for rent. This is why I would still want to use my transfers to pay rent. I will also save part of my transfers to help me start a small shoe business. I know the business will help me meet my family needs well and save me the energy I use on casual work yet earn very little income.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer on paying for a mechanic course which I have been undertaking since November 2019. I will be done with the course in March 2020 courtesy of GD transfers. I want to be a mechanic since I do not have any source of income now. This will help me sustain my needs in the future. The rest of the transfers I used on paying the remaining part of the rent. I had used the little I had to pay for rent early in the month but had a balance I was to clear before the end of the month. I used the transfers to clear the debt.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I lost my driving job only three months after I got enrolled in this program, but I did not have such a hard time during the period I had no source of income because the transfers kept me afloat by taking care of most of my needs. The transfers also enabled me to quickly set up business in selling shoes because only a month's transfer was enough capital for me to buy enough stock to start me off. Without the transfers, I am very sure I could not have managed to raise enough money to start the business and would still be struggling through casual jobs daily.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
Apart from the shoe business, I am currently running, I have plans of starting a new business on motorcycle taxi operation which will also assist me in delivering the shoes to my online customers. I know that I may not be able to save enough money to buy the motorcycle due to low income, so I will buy it on credit then use most of my daily earnings to clear the loan. I have the confidence to do this because the monthly transfers will be helping in taking care of most of my personal and household needs which will give me an easy time paying for the motorcycle.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have a cousin who I sometimes support by paying part of his fees. To avoid the rush that is usually experienced at the begging of the year, I decided to pay part of his fees for the first term of next year with part of my most recent transfer then spent the rest on foodstuff and other household needs.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a reduced burden of paying rent which has always been troublesome for me for quite a long time. I used to borrow money a lot from friends and relatives but right now, I no longer have to borrow any cash from anyone to sort out my rent issues. The amount of debts I used to shoulder in the past has tremendously reduced overtime which makes me happy.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I have a goal of opening my own barber shop just within this locality. From the little research that I have done so far, I have been able to establish that this business is very viable and can earn me some good income every month. Being that I am always a very busy person, I will have to employ someone who will do the work on my behalf and of course, I will be paying him some money at the end of each month.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the transfers on paying my rent which is always charged at a flat rate of Kes 2000. This is always the first priority for me at the end of each month because I do not want to get into conflicts with my landlord due to lack of rent payments. Once I had paid my rent, I remained with Kes 3000 which I used to pay for my mechanic course which I have been pursuing for the last eight months. I have always had a dream of pursuing this course but then I have never been able to do so due to lack of money.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
Poultry farming is what I am planning to invest in. I will save the transfers and also join table banking groups. As soon as they are enough, I will go to my rural home to practice the same on large scale.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is I relocated to a much safer and better place courtesy of the transfer. This has really given me happiness and comfort away from the fears that came along with the place where I had rented a house. First, the fires were very common and at some point, I lost all my stuff. There was also a high rate of insecurity and worst of all robbery with violence. I could not relocate from this place since I did not have the financial capacity to pay a higher amount of rent. The transfers have enabled me to live a more comfortable life and I am really grateful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the whole of the recent transfer on paying college fees. Immediately after being enrolled in the programme I joined a college to study mechanics. So the monthly transfers have been aiding the payment of college fees.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
I was in the barbershop where I am employed when a message notifying me that I had received the transfers came in. I was super excited that could not work anymore. I told my boss to give me a day off and off I went to meet my fellow recipients who had received the transfer so that we could celebrate together. We were all in high spirits as we thanked God for what to us seemed like a miracle.
