How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In a few months, I am hoping to open a retail shop just within my village. Lately, I have been thinking about this kind of business considering they are countable in my region, hence are in high demand. I also trust that once I achieve that, all my troubles will come to an end. I have been selling charcoal for years, which is tedious and not profitable. Therefore, I believe that this business change will bring a huge transformation to my life as well.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirecyly does well by ensuring that I am well-informed about how to secure the cash transfer. Also, they issued me a phone, which was the most outstanding experience so far since I have never owned one before. Additionally, I can now communicate with my family with ease, unlike before. Therefore, I do not see anything that needs changing.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer buying all the necessary materials to construct a new house. I had to prioritize it since the previous one was a small, muddy hut made of nylon on the roof.  It was so stressful during the rainy seasons because we could be rained on till the rain stopped. Also, I have been experiencing damages and losses on my properties. It is a nice feeling to shelter in a decent place, and I can't thank the organization enough. Later on, I cleared school fees totaling $40 for my five children and bought new uniforms as well. Their previous ones had worn out, and their classmates have been making fun of them. I am so happy that this has restored their self-esteem, which will truly enable them to improve their performance. Also, I bought three goats for $127, which I am now keeping in my compound. I intend to sell some once they increase in number and pay fees for my children, since this has been a major challenge. Finally, with the remaining amount of money, I bought food for my nine family members. It is now a relief to me since we have enough food; I will no longer borrow from neighbors as I have been doing. Also, the balanced diet has enabled my ailing spouse to be very strong now.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Being a casual laborer, I was on our neighbor's farm tilling. It was around 4 pm when I received the loud message alert on my phone. Since I am illiterate, I had to return home for my helper to check and interpret the message. It was a very joyful moment in the family when he checked and informed me that I had received the transfer from Give directly. This installed confidence in my life that finally, I would be able to achieve my desires in my life.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life is that I am optimistic that I would be able to own a nice structure. This will restore the joy in my life since we would no longer have to speed sleepless nights due to the leaking roof. Moreover, I can provide for the basic needs of the family like food without any struggle and our kids no longer go to bed without food.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had desired to start livestock rearing as an alternative source of livelihood to support our family of 9kids. I assumed the responsibility of bringing up the family after my spouse was diagnosed with stroke that render him economically inactive. Temporary casual activities are what I opted to support the family. After receiving the transfer, I spent $100 to purchase 4 goats an investment for the family. Additionally, I spent $300 to construct a decent shelter for the family since the one we had was old and leaks during the rainy season. Currently, I am happy it is about to be complete and can not hold the joy of seeing us living in a mud, one-roomed irony roofed house. With the remaining amount, I bought enough food for the family.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I am a mother of nine children and we are all living in a one-room house that lacks privacy. Cooking is also done in the same room so clothes have a smoky smell every day. After taking birth my husband Katana and I do change our clothes in the bush because the children are in the house. I feel ashamed of my situation. I plan to build a three-room house with an iron sheets roof. I will buy 30 iron sheets at a cost of $300, labor at a cost $200 and other building materials at a cost of $ 150. I will also use $ 500 to clear the school fees balances for my children so that they can continue with their studies. I am thankful for Gived directly program.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The county government of Kilifi through the drought management department brought relief food in our village three days a go. I got 8kg of maize and this food lasts for three days. However little the food was, I did not take it for granted rather I felt happy and appreciated the effort of our government to help us during this famine period.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have a family of 11 members. I do casual jobs making charcoal for sell. I sell 5 bags of charcoal in a month and at $3 each. This gives me an income of $15 which is not sufficient for the family needs. This money goes for food expenses only. 5 of my children are schooling at Mitsedzini primary school. They have been away from school for a month now due to school fees balances. They all have a fees balance of $50 and I am unable to raise this due to lack of job. Lack of reliable source of income is the challenge I am currently facing.
