How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming year and beyond, my primary goal is to ensure that my four children can attend school without interruptions, particularly from being sent home due to unpaid fees. Additionally, I am working hard to provide for their other basic needs. My eldest daughter is currently in her final year of secondary school, and I am determined that she won't finish school only to sit at home with nothing to do. That’s why I joined a merry-go-round savings group, where I save $20 from my transfers each month. My plan is to enroll her in computer classes immediately after she completes her secondary education. These transfers have given my children opportunities to engage in meaningful activities, keeping them away from early pregnancies and marriages. My focus is solely on continuing to save so that I can provide my children with the education they need to reach their full potential. This is my constant prayer, and I am optimistic that, in the long run, I will achieve what my heart desires for my children.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Thanks to GiveDirectly, we were able to form monthly savings groups, which became possible due to the steady income we now receive. These groups have evolved beyond just financial support—they've brought us women closer together, allowing us to share ideas and strengthen our community bonds. With my most recent transfer, I chose to save $43 in our savings group as I prepare for my daughter’s upcoming college expenses, given that she’s in her final year of secondary school. I also allocated $42 to purchase food for my family, as we were running low on supplies at the time. Since I depend on casual work, like burning and selling charcoal, to support my six children, ensuring food security is always a top priority. The remaining $17 went towards medical expenses when one of my children fell ill. I deeply appreciate the GiveDirectly transfers, as they have alleviated the pressure of working tirelessly without rest and have provided significant relief from financial stress.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My primary objective at this moment revolves around ensuring the successful completion of my daughter's education in secondary school. It's a journey filled with challenges, yet each step forward fills me with pride and determination. Once she's crossed this educational milestone, my focus will shift towards investing in goats, hence securing a brighter future for my family.I envision a time when these goats multiply, where I would sell them, providing a sustainable source of income that will enable me to support the education of my other children. This vision gives me hope and purpose for my family despite the obstacles we have faced.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Ensuring my children's education remains uninterrupted is a top priority, especially with one in secondary school where school fees expenses are high. I allocated $83 from the transfers to cover their school fees, sparing them the worry of missing out on their studies. Amidst the challenges, my husband's prolonged illness weighed heavily on us. Despite our best efforts and the timely assistance of $15 I allocated from the transfers towards his medical expenses, the illness ultimately claimed him. The pain of losing a loved one is immeasurable, leaving a void that words can't fill. In the face of tragedy, the responsibility of caring for my family persists. With the remaining $4, I ensured there was food on the table, a humble addition to the little that we have in store. It's in these small gestures of sustenance and care that we find solace amidst grief, clinging to the hope that brighter days lie ahead.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My second born had cleared primary school and was meant to join Secondary school, she had been accepted to a boarding school some place far from home but due to my financial struggles I opted to take her to a day school where I only paid $2 which was not even the full payment for the school. I thank God my oldest was taken up by an institution that pay her school fees and now I am left with 5 children to worry about. Knowing that I am still receiving Givedirectly transfers my plan is to ensure I educate all my children to give them a fair chance at life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a mother of 6 school going children. I am currently the sole breadwinner of my home. Three years ago my husband was diagnosed with diabetes and because of our lack of finances his state deteriorated fast. He is unable to engage in productive labour and falls ill from time to time like this January the $30 received from Givedrirectly as well as money pooled together by his siblings we were able to take him to hospital as he got in such a bad state he was admitted. I had been saving in December and November to be able to afford to pay the deficits at my child's school of about $50 for my second born child and $45 for my third born. I was only able to clear for my second born as I saved $20 in November and $30 in December. I bought some chicken in November at $12 and also got some toiletries at $2.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am considering purchasing two goats, as I currently do not have any, and this will mark the beginning of my investment. My husband's diabetes has prompted me to plan for more goats so that, in the future, I can sell them to cover his medical expenses and support our children's school fees.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As a devoted mother of six, my initial thought upon receiving my transfers was to ensure my children's education remained uninterrupted, without them being sent home from school. I promptly allocated $20 to cover the school fees for all six of them. With the remaining $14, I joyfully provided nourishing meals for my children.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My husband has been dealing with a rare illness for some time. As a result, he cannot work and is constantly at home. As a result, supporting my family has been difficult. Because of the current scenario, I have not set any new goals, but I have decided to use my transfer to meet my family's urgent educational and nutritional needs. I hope to prioritize paying school fees and purchasing food for my family with the transfers. I believe it will be simple for me to support my family. Without the GiveDirectly's transfers, this would not be possible owing to the hard situations we experience as a family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have a daughter, Kadzonzo who is in High School. I used $20 to pay part of her school fees. She had fee arrears of $70 that I could not raise at once because I am the sole breadwinner though I do not have a regular source of income. In addition, I spent the rest $4 on paying examination fees for my four children in Primary School. Immediately after I received my recent transfer, I spent $10 on food for my family of seven members. We did not have food then because we had depleted what we had. It was always a struggle to fend for my family because my husband is always sick and cannot work.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
This year my top most priority is to ensure that I use the transfers to pay for tuition for my five children. This is quite important especially since my husband cannot help me due go his sickness and my kids ought to stay in school. I also plan on using the money on matters concerned with nutrition because it is a challenge for my family from time to time.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I immediately spent KES 2,000 on paying my daughter's tuition after she was expelled from school a week earlier due to a debt she had. After that, I spent KES 1,000 on nutrition because I had to take over as the family's primary provider after my husband became ill and we were running low on food. I utilized that money to purchase five packets of maize flour for that reason. Last but not least, I used the remaining KES 400 to cover a medical cost after my son was admitted for malaria.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, I have never seen or heard anything GiveDirectly is not doing well. Ever since they came into our lives,  there is only a positive impact on the people they visited. Also, no one was left out provided he or she was a resident of the visited village.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my recent transfer on buying two chickens at a total of KES 600. I had been yearning to at least own one for quite a long time but they were very expensive. I am now hopeful that once they multiply, I will be able to achieve a lot through them. To add to that, I cleared fees of KES 2200 for my daughter who is in her second year in high school. I am so thankful that the money came in good time because the exam was just around the corner and I was certain that she would miss it. Finally, I used the remaining amount of money to buy foodstuffs for my family and other household needs.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home at around 7 pm with my mind loaded with thoughts on where I would get the means to purchase dinner for the family. My oldest girl came running towards me holding my phone, yelling that I had gotten cash from an obscure shipper. I checked the phone, and in the wake of perusing, I affirmed that this was indeed my first transfer. Amazing! I was pretty much as blissful as a ruler. I quickly strolled into the Mpesa shop, where I pulled out the cash and purchased nourishment for the family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
For some time, I have been in the predicament of whether to foot my better half's clinical costs, purchase food for the family, or pay school expenses for the children. I earn very little from my casual work, which isn't sufficient to take special care of this large number of needs. I'm glad that the unconditional exchange had a colossal effect on my life by helping me returning my children to school.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I'm the sole provider for the family, making money through selling charcoal and sisal ropes. My better half can't work as a result of his poor health. He was diagnosed with diabetes and has frequently seen him in and out of the emergency clinic. I have encountered difficulties in giving fundamental necessities to my family (paying school charges, purchasing food, and clearing my better half's clinical costs). I frequently spend the little I have on dealing with my sick spouse, and I can't pay school expenses and purchase food for the children at the same time. Because of this, my kids were sent home due to school fee balances and were forced to spend an entire month without going to class. When I received my transfer, I paid school fees and unfulfilled obligations worth KES 2000 for my children to return to school. Other than paying the unfulfilled obligations, I bought food for the family right after draining the overabundance of food stock in the house.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
In the past, I used to rear livestock for resale. The returns were good and we lived quite a comfortable life. When my husband fell ill, all the money we made was used for hospital bills. I would like to revive this business so that it gives us some money to pay school fees and buy food for our children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The gift of life makes me grateful. I am also grateful that we are all alive and well despite harsh financial times. I am hoping to see the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
In Mombasa, my husband runs a grocery store. He works hard to provide for us but the returns do not cover all our needs. We could use another source of income but there is no capital to start even a small business.
