How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Since I am all alone in the family, I have a goal of buying some livestock for creation of wealth. Because of the drought conditions currently in my area, the goats are suitable since they can withstand the drought condition because they are browsers. Once they multiply in numbers, I will accumulate the wealth after a long period.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Through the unconditional transfers that Give Directly gave me, I could change around my life from the constant struggles I was facing. I would like to Give Directly to merge the transfers and send it all at once in the future. This will provide an excellent opportunity in enabling one to plan well for the money.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a widow with no child. After my husband passing away, I am alone to take care of myself. Since I did not have a job, I opted to cut down trees and burn down pieces of wood to make charcoal for sale. The earnings from the sale of charcoal are not enough to sustain my needs, which include food, buying clothes, improving the condition of my life. Upon receiving my second transfer, I spent KES 30000 to connect my house with electricity. I have been using hurricane lanterns since I was born and it has affected my sight. Now that I am having electricity in my house, I will charge phones for other people at a cost and also improve the lighting in my house. Besides connecting electricity in my house, I spent some other amount to buy a bed and mattress. I have been sleeping on a makeshift bed for the past 30 years of my life, made of sisal ropes. Because of this, I have been having constant back pains and poor health. I am now happy that I sleep comfortably and as a result my back pains are slowly vanishing.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was very late in the evening but I hadn't gone to bed yet as I was talking to my family members still when I got the SMS confirming that I had received the money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy when I received the money, I slept so well and woke up feeling good because I knew I was going to address the challenges I was facing that had left me stranded and unhappy, especially the debts that had accumulated over time in the local kiosks.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving money from GiveDirectly is that we now get food regularly, we sleep comfortably and I am happier than before. I was also relieved from the tedious and tiresome work of cutting trees and burn charcoal and sell, I am so happy and grateful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the transfer which was KES 9000 on buying a bed and mattress because we used to sleep on a very uncomfortable bed of sisal ropes which used to be making me so unhappy. Therefore, when I received this money, I immediately went for a bed and mattress because I desired comfort, to be sleeping on a proper bed and mattress like anyone else around. I also spent KES 5000 in settling the debts that had accumulated over time in various local kiosks where I used to take some food stuffs on credit. This was because I used to rely on my charcoal burning and selling business which hardly raised enough to enable me meet my family's immediate needs, which is why I had to turn to taking food items on credit. These accumulated debts used to give me headache and sleepless nights, hence, it was a very huge relief when I got the money because I was able to settle them. I am so happy and grateful to GiveDirectly for making that happen.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means improved living standard to my household. This is because I am a widow depending on charcoal production as a source of income. The work is energy draining and consumes a lot of time to get the charcoal ready for sale. Besides the returns are not enough to sustain all my basic needs such as food and water water. I am planning to spend the first transfer to renovate my house, buy beddings and five indigenous goats so that I create assets that will help me in future. I will use the second transfer to pay school fees to my grand daughter who is in class eight when she joins secondary school next year.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I will not be saying the truth if I inform you that I am happy because the death of my husband still makes feel lonely. However, the fact that I sleep and wakes up in good health gives me joy and happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The challenge that I am currently facing is food insecurity due to prolonged drought. This is because it has been three years since we received ample rain and got good harvest. Since my husband passed on four years ago, I have been feeling lonely and sometimes I feel so week that I am not able to work at the charcoal production site. Due to this I struggle to get money to cater for my daily need like food and water. Sometimes, I borrow from relatives which makes me feel ashamed.
