How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a four bedroomed house which I would have never had were it not for the cash transfers from GD. At my age, there is nowhere I would have gotten such a huge amount of money, so the idea of building a new house would have just remained to be a dream that could never be realized.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The organization has really helped the poor by giving them unconditional transfers that are used in different ways by various sets of people. Most people used the money to buy what they needed the most in their lives. On the contrary, I have not seen any negative things that can be associated with GD.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I used the cash to build a new house because the one that I had initially was in such a dilapidated state. Moreover, the house was so small and could barely accommodate my family so the only option for me was to get a new structure. I built a four bedroomed house and cemented the entire walls of the building which now makes it look very neat and presentable.

I spent my transfer on buying iron sheets, polls and nails that I used to build a new house because the one I was staying in was too weak and it was almost falling down. I also paid school fees for my grandchildren who are in Secondary School.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I will be able to pay school fees for my three children who are in secondary school and part of it will be spent on renovating my house as I will buy some bags of cement for plastering my house.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is the morning when I go to my food kiosk at Ombei center. This makes me happy because I am able to get some income out of it that I can feed my family with.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I face in my life is that our income is very low and this gives us a challenge when it comes to paying school fees for our children.
