How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a new goal of starting a business that will give us sustainable income. I am thinking about buying and selling cereals. Despite all the things that we did with the first and second transfer, getting a business will be very important to us in making sure that we meet the cost of basic household needs. I plan to do this once one of my children has completed his secondary school education.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly did very well by giving us cash to help ourselves. Looking at the house that I have improved, the livestock and the fees makes me so happy.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 30000 to buy livestock and used the remaining amount to buy paints that were used in finishing up our newly built house. I also used Kes 10000 to pay school fees for my two children who are in their secondary level of studies. I am so much happy that with GiveDirectly transfers I have after a long time been able to clear school fees for my children and be sure to have my children staying in school all year round without them being sent home for school fees. The livestock that I bought were a savings plan that will help me pay their school fees in the near future too.It has always been my desire to give the best in terms of education to my children with the hope that they will do better and have better living standards. I am a mother of five and my husband works as a motorcycle operater to raise school fees.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Of course I felt so much happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. I was on my way home from a nearby town around 5:00pm. I heard my phone ring and confirmed that we had finally received money from GiveDirectly. I ran home and shared the good news with my husband who was equally very happy.i felt happy that the needs such as payment of school fees were finally going to be sorted and so easily for that matter.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily live is the house that I have since made improvements. Talk about the plywood that I was able to put on the walls and the general improvement that made it warmer and more presentable. I look forward to receiving the second transfer and be able to bring it to completion. I feel so much indebted to GiveDirectly for this support
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 10000 to clear school fees for my child who was joining secondary school and used another KES 20000 to improve my house. The remaining amount was used to buy food and other basic household needs. I made a decision to improve my timber walled house to make it better and warmer than it was before. I bought soft boards which I erected on the walls and also did the painting. I also fixed windows and window panes that were not fixed before. What remains is the floor of the house which God willing shall be complete once I receive the second transfer. I feel so much happy and lucky to have been part of GiveDirectly beneficiaries.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am lucky that I have been able to build a 2roomed semi-permanent house 2 years ago which I was unable to complete, this is because have been paying school fees to my son who completed his secondary school studies in April this year. Being a housewife and we fully depend on my husband who works as a motorbike rider at a nearby shopping center where he earns KES 300 per day, this is not sufficient to cater to all the family needs including school fees, food, and clothing for our 5 children. Receiving money from Give directly is a prayer and answered prayer for me. I am planning to spend KES 60,000 to cement the floor of my house and install windows and ceiling boards I have always desired to own a decent house for a long time this will bring us more happiness as a family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
We harvested 1bag of maize in the previous season and this has enabled my family to have enough food for the last 1month. Seeing my family healthy and happy has brought me more happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The main challenge is food insecurity. I practice subsistence farming mainly we farm maize and beans, maize has not been doing so well in my village due to a disease that has been infecting maize crops. My husband works as a motorbike rider and he earns KES 300 a day, this is not enough to cater to all the family needs, especially with the high cost of living in the country. So having a balanced diet has been a great challenge for my family.
