How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The new goals that emerged that I did not have before are that I was able to purchase a motorbike and a dairy cow. I am happy that I now have a stable business and getting plenty of milk for my family's consumption. These assets have for sure transformed my entire life because initially, I used to undergo a lot of troubles like skipping meals since I did not have any reliable job.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly is the best organization because as much as we were well informed on how it operates it makes it unique. First, the idea of supporting us financially and the money had no restrictions. We were also equally treated regardless of our tribes, religion, and age. I am happy to be among the beneficiaries and for the huge positive transformation in my household.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying a motorbike at KES 40000. I have been relying on odd jobs with very low wages which could not sustain all my family's needs. Most of the days, my children and I had to skip meals, sleeping in poor sheltering for over ten years. I am happy that with the money I earn from the motorbike business, I have been able to take good care of my family without struggling. I also bought a dairy cow at KES 13150. This has also been my objective to own it because it has numerous benefits as compared to the other domestic animals. The idea of getting milk every for free every morning has been my dream and I am glad it is a success. My children can now take milk which is a surplus to their daily meals.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
At around 9am when I was at my daily hustles in the field where I work as a loader, loading sacks of charcoals into Lorries and also other means of transport, I received a message in my phone. I took out my phone from the rear pocket of my torn jeans and confirmed what it was all about. I was astonished by seeing a huge amount of money that had been sent to my phone. Curiously I wanted to know where the money had been sent from and after realizing that it was the promised transfer for GiveDirectly, I was overwhelmed and my heart became cold after picturing the hardships I have been going through due to lack of money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest different I can attest is the heath of my son. Although he hasn’t recovered fully but if it were not for this transfer, I can’t clearly say where he would be right now. I am very grateful for the medication he got in assistance of the money that I was sent from GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My son had been sick for a while, he was having some stomach complications thus I immediately took him for medication after getting my first transfer. His medication cost was KES 25000.00. Being a father of 7 children, I had some fee balances in the school they are and this was not giving peace of mind. In respect to that I took KES 9000.00 and cleared the fee balances that the school required for my children. I also bought a bed and a mattress for KES 12000.00 as well as repair my motorbike which has been aiding me in fetching some water for KES 3500.00. For the remaining amount I bought some building poles for KES 3500.00 so as to mark a start of the second transfer which I am planning to construct a house.
