How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The biggest difference in my daily life since I received my transfer is that I now have a permanent house. I have been living in a mud-walled house for the past three years. Its state has been worsening due to rains in my area and I could not also keep up with smearing on a monthly basis because it is time-consuming and very tedious. I wanted to dedicate the time on more income-generating activities. I am happy my goal has been achieved through the transfers.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I feel GD did well in carrying out a survey before giving the transfers. This helped to gauge the right people to get the transfers. The questions asked too in the survey were easy to answer hence we did not feel left out because of the transfers. There is nothing GD did not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my transfer on buying building materials such as iron sheets, timber and nails which I used on building my new house. I have been living in a grass thatched house for the past two years. I felt it was time to upgrade to the iron-roofed house through GD transfers. I used the money to pay the mason who constructs the new house. The remaining I used to pay school fees for my children to reduce the balance they had in school. I am glad since then I have never received any letter from school about fees arrears. I also bought food with the transfer soi that we may not lack what to eat in the house.I would not be happy when we do not have food in the house.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
I lived in a mud wall house that I had struggled to make it decent and permanent. I was in the process renovating my house before materials got depleted underway. When I received my transfer, I went ahead and purchased adequate blocks, sand and cement to facilitate completion. I have now upgraded it to a decent permanent house giving me peace because I do not have to worry in case of heavy rains like before. I see this as the biggest difference in my daily life and I thank GiveDirectly for having made this possible.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was woken up by the message alert early in the morning. I could not hold the joy that filled my heart instantly upon confirming that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I was left sleepless thus could not wait for daybreak to plan. I immediately planned the completion of my house renovation and payment of my children fee since these were the major challenging needs. I was thankful to them having received this financial help that would change my life completely.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I had started renovating my mud wall house to make it look decent and permanent before GiveDirectly came to our village. I wasn't able to complete after materials got depleted and couldn't buy more due to lack of enough resources. I spent part of the transfer on purchasing building materials and embarked on finishing the renovation. I am happy that soon I will have a decent permanent house. I also paid school fees in advance for my children in high school to avoid interruptions in their studies. I am happy that I have given my children ample time to build their future through education. Lastly, I bought foodstuffs and other basic needs for my family thus we currently have enough food.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My greatest desire is to complete rebuilding the walls of my house with blocks in place of the mud. This will make sure my house lasts long and perseveres through any harsh weather such as heavy rainfall and strong winds. My second priority is paying fees for my daughter in secondary school so that her studies are uninterrupted. Lastly, with the remaining amount, I will expand my small shop business to boost my income so I can comfortably cater for other needs of the family such as food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is at night when am done with my day's work and finally get time to rest.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband and I always set development goals for our family each year. Last year we decided on replacing the mud walls of our house with blocks to make it last longer. Unfortunately, our funds ran out as we opted to pay fees for our daughter who was joining secondary school and to date the project is at a standstill. We have been working tirelessly to raise money to complete the work but our incomes are not sufficient enough to complete this as well as meet other needs of food and education. This is our biggest hardship.
