How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, after receiving my first transfer, I longed to build my house and a small veranda outside it, and buy a goat and good food for my family. Before I started receiving this form of aid for GiveDirectly, I had a very bad house with no door or a window the roof too was so old and had a lot of holes. During sunny seasons, the heat from the sun could penetrate in and burn us even from the inside, it could burn even my belongings. During rainy seasons, we could be rained on and everything in the house could be wet. My belongings could be ruined in the process. Chickens could enter from any part of the house, eat food and destroy my other belongings as they poop anyhow on their way out. My family used to forgo lunch, and only eat dinner and breakfast because the food was scarce. I thank GiveDirectly for the support, all this problems are now a bygone in my life.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I thank GiveDirectly for the far It has bought us. I am happy about the transfers I received for the two months, a sum of Kes. 110000 which I could not get anyhow. May God bless you. On the other hand, I do not have any complaints at all since I have not seen any. Thank you so much GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a mother of two, a son who is in class two, and a daughter who is in class six. My husband is a motorbike rider while I am jobless and a stay-at-home mother, even though I do farming when it rains. I spent the Kes. 30000 to buy a motorbike for my husband and Kes. 5000 in paying school fees for my daughter who is in class six. Before I started receiving transfers from GineDirectly, she used to be sent home due to a lack of school fees since I had no money to pay for her. I also spent Kes. 5000 in buying clothes for my children, they lacked proper attire to put on. With the remaining Kes. 13150, I bought good and enough food since we used to have two meals in a day due to lack of money.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was on my way from the dam together with my daughter, when I heard my phone ringing very loudly. Since we were in a hurry and it was getting late I had to rush home. On arriving home, I had to check the contents of the messages and I was so shocked to see KES 55000 in my Mpesa account. I felt so happy since it was like a miracle to me, also I was certain that I would finally buy a mortbike.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My spouse has been the family breadwinner for the past five solid years. This has however not been easy for him at all since he was employed by his friend and paid on commission. From this motorbike business, he used to earn KES 250 in a day which could hardly sustain all our basic needs as a family. My two children were always at home due to the accumulated fees, also skipping meals used to be a routine. Therefore after receiving the cash, we had to think of a permanent solution to all the hiccups that we have been undergoing. Having our motorbike has therefore brought the biggest difference in our daily life because whatever we earn( KES 1500 in a day) is all ours. We no longer strain like before in meeting the family's needs courtesy of GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a huge portion of my first cash transfer ( KES 49000) to buy a second-hand motorbike. This had to be a priority because my spouse had a good experience since he has been operating hose of his friends for him to earn a living. However, he used to earn so little that could hardly sustain our needs. We then felt there was a need to purchase our own. I am so thankful for the profits we have been earning lately, meeting the familys has never been a challenge like before. To add to that, I bought a new mattress at KES for my kids because they have been using mats and I thought there was a demand for a change. With the remaining money, I had to buy food for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a family of 4 members and I depend on casual labor at a nearby quarry while my husband is a motorcycle rider. Both of us earn around KES 2100 which is not sufficient for the needs of the household. In a day, I need KES 300 to meet the necessities. Consequently, I have had the fancy to start livestock farming. I am planning to spend KES 40,000 to buy 10 indigenous goats. As they reproduce, I will sell at a profit and use the proceeds for other domestic use such as education for my children. The second transfer will help me to start a food kiosk to increase our sources of income. Thus receiving this money means a better living standard for my dependants and me. It will enable me to rest from traveling long distances (15KM) to the quarry where the job is cumbersome and has low payment.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In December last year, I received KES 5500 donation from Kenya Redcross. I clearly remember this day because, I had come back home from my daily work of charcoal production. I had left my family with nothing to eat earlier in the morning. A lot of thoughts were lingering in my mind not knowing what to do. When I arrived at my homestead I was filled with joy and happiness when my wife informed me about the transfer. It helped us to buy foodstuffs that lasted us for a month.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of finance is the challenge that I am currently facing. This has been contributed by the fact that my spouse and I do casual jobs which are not reliable. The extreme weather conditions in our area have also added pain to our hearts. Crops have dried up due to the scorching sun and windy resulting to glaring signs of poor harvests. As a result, the money we get goes into buying food alone. Sometimes, the situation is worse that we take porridge for supper and skip a meal, especially lunch.
