How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do have a new goal of starting a small business. I used all of my first and second transfer to put myself and my family back to original position we were in by buying some of the most basic assets like livestock. Now that we have the livestock, our new goal is to start a new business that will ease our living standards and make life much more easy and much more affordable for all of us. I am looking forward towards making savings that will see me realize this soon enough but I am equally very grateful for the help that we received from GiveDirectly.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly did very well by helping each and every person and doing so unconditionally. The fact that no single person or household in the village was left unattended was so encouraging. The other bit of giving all of us the freedom to choose how to spend the money was also so good. Every person that received the cash is so happy about this.Ww all used the money wisely and the level of satisfaction is seen across the village.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 40000 to buy livestock for keeping in my compound a d used the entire amount that remained to buy food, clothes and other basic household needs. The money came when we did not have any livestock in our compound having sold all that we had to pay school fees for our children and to foot medical bills for my husband who had been ill for a long time. I feel happy seeing the livestock that I bought and knowing that soon I will no longer have to buy milk like I am buying since we will have enough being produced by the livestock that we bought. This shall definitely make life much more affordable by relieving us of the burden of buying everything including milk.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had just woken up and was in the process of making tea for my family when I heard my phone vibrating. Since I am illiterate, I called my helper and requested him to check and know who had called me. My heart was filled with joy when he informed me that it was not a call but a Mpesa message indicating that GiveDirectly had sent the financial aid as they had promised. I informed him that we should wait for at least two weeks before cashing it out since I was not in a rush to start spending it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I have started living a happy life ever since I received my transfer. This is because I am now a proud owner of a dairy cow and I currently sleep in a warm house. I had lived in it for the past eight years without being able to buy the windows and it was always very cold at night, especially during the rainy seasons. I am glad that GiveDirectly enabled me to achieve this and buy a dairy cow. I am hopeful that the cow will calve soon and I will start earning money from the sale of surplus and use the income in meeting some of our needs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I depend on a small business of buying and selling eggs and different kinds of vegetables in the neighborhood and I usually spend all my income on our basic needs. Due to this, I had not been able to fulfill some of my goals and I am glad that with the help from GiveDirectly, I have been able to achieve them. Upon receiving my recent transfer, I spent KES 35000 on the purchase of a dairy cow since I have been depending on my children to give me some milk after I sold all the livestock that we had and spent the money on my husband's medication when he was sick. In addition, I spent some amount furnishing our main house by spending KES 9000 on three windows and KES 1000 on labor. It was always very cold at night since we had used tree ply as temporary windows due to lack of funds. Using the remaining amount, I bought some food and other basic needs for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
5 years ago, my husband developed health complications that required doctors attention. This operation was way too expensive for my family as we ended up selling all the 8 cows we had. Although this was a big loss, my family of 2 had to move on. I resorted to borrowing a dairy cow from my sister to have some milk for the household as well as earn income. My greatest fear though is that she might repossess it some time and my family's food security will be compromised. So when I receive these transfers, I intend to use KES 40000 to purchase a dairy cow. I will be glad that I will be able to make independent decisions as my financial status will be uplifted.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In December 2021, my children who were away for an entire year came visiting. On this occasion, I was delighted that they brought me foodstuff that lasted the whole of January. I was glad that my family of 2 will be food secure as I did not have to struggle much considering my old age.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
On my day to day activities, I cultivate vegetables and rear chicken to support my family of 2. From this, I earn KES 1500 monthly that caters for the household needs such as education for my granddaughter and food. This is insufficient and it hurts me that my family has to forgo meals at times for lack of finances.
