How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Completing the construction of my house is the main goal that I currently have, this is because I am yet to complete it. Secondly, I intend to start livestock rearing especially goats a long-term investment for my future. With the goats rearing, I will be able to cater for any emergency financial needs that might arise in the future.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well in sending cash transfers directly to our phones. Additionally, the transfer was non-refundable which was the best thing for us. I do not see anything that the organization did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The transfer come at a time when I needed it most. All my children had been sent out of school due to a huge fee balance. After receiving my transfer, I prioritize their educational need by spending KES 10,500 to clear their fees. Currently, I am happy they are learning without any disruption. I also used KES 11,500 to purchase building materials, this was for the construction of a separate shelter for my grown-up kids who are currently seeking shelter at our neighbours. Seeing them walking at night to the neighbor's house kept me worried about their safety. I also saved some of the remaining amount of the transfer for labour costs as well as purchasing the remaining building materials like iron sheets.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 AM when I was making breakfast when my phone started ringing so loudly. My son was using my phone at that particular time and he decided to check the contents of the messages. He later informed us that there is an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I was so excited because I knew my financial problems would come to an end. This still feels like a dream to me becasue in the first place I thought it was a scam receiving such a huge amount of the money which is non-refundable.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I was able to renovate my house which had an old leaky roof. I have always been wishing to do the renovation but this was not achievable because of the poor financial status I was experiencing. My spouse has been the family breadwinner who is a casual laborer and in the day he would earn KSH.150. This income was very low and could barely meet the family's basic needs like food and fees for my ten children. Therefore there was no coin left for other activities such as the renovation of my house. It was so tough especially when it rains, we had to seek shelter from relatives. Also, we were always attacked by cold-related diseases like pneumonia and asthma. The fact that I managed to renovate my house still feels like a dream to me that has come to an end. We are now happily sheltering in a very pleasant environment without having to worry about the rains and the insecurities.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on paying school fees of KES 6000 for my son who is in his first year. Also, I bought a mattress and bed at KES 11000 to replace the traditional beddings that I have been using for all those years. To add to that, I cleared a hospital bill of KES 3000 since I have been unwell for quite some time and I am glad I am doing pretty fine. Also, I bought fourteen pieces of iron sheets at KES 10000 which were for the renovation of my house that was grass thatched. At least there will be a relief now because we have been seeking shelter for all those years. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough food for my children and new clothes for my children.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means building a spacious house for my family. We are a family of ten and we are all living in a one bedroom house with grass roof. It leaks during rains season and it is not enough to accommodate all the family. I will build a three bedroom house at a cost of 80000 KES. This will cover me from the shame I have now of living with my ten children in the same one room. I will also use 20000 KES to pay school fees for my son who is in secondary school. I will use the remaining 10000 KES to buy food for the family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of the day is in the evening. This is because my children are back from school and I feel good taking supper with my children. After supper we pray together and go to bed.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My house is made of grass roof and it leaks very much during rains season. On May 2021 during the long rains season, I spent sleepless nights with my children because of the rain . It really affected my children such that two of them suffered pneumonia. That is the biggest hardship I faced in my life.
