How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to look for a job so that I can support my family of four. In a few weeks, I will be done with my course and my plan is to look for a job so that when I get paid, I will spend the money on educating my children so that they can't lack finances like myself. My dream is to take them to the best school and have quality education so that they can live better lives.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly had good intentions of helping us to get out of poverty. They supported us with lumpsum cash which was enough to improve our standards of living and that's what was done well. What was not done well is during enrollment, some people like us who were not at home during enrollment, were almost left out yet we were residents. I found it unfair in the sense that we go out to look for work or to school so that we can uplift our families. It would have been unfair if the officers would have left someone like me who was in need. Were it not for these funds, my dreams would have been shuttered.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a university student and sometime last year I deferred my studies due to a lack of school fees. Before we had sold all the livestock that we had and called for fundraising but that wasn't enough. I had no hope and at the time when I was thinking of what to do, GiveDirectly came to our village and promised us cash transfers. From that moment when I was successfully enrolled I sat down with my spouse and agreed that we shall spend the money on paying for my school fees. When I received the second transfer, I spent the whole amount on paying for my school fees. I am happy that in the next week I will be sitting for my final exams. I thank GiveDirectly for their support for it has enabled me to complete my course in Business Information Technology.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 7 am and I was still in my rented house at the university preparing myself to go to school. Suddenly, I heard a message ringtone and stopped to check what the new message was all about. I was surprised when I opened the contents of the SMS which was saying that I had received KES 55000 in my mobile money account from GiveDirectly. I was so happy and I immediately called my husband to inform him of the great news. He was so happy too and we thanked God for blessing us.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a very big difference into our lives. I am in my final year of study and I have hopes that I will finally be able to finish my studies at the University. This is something I never thought I will be able to achieve soon since we didn't know where we were going to get money for the fees.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent KES 35000 of our recent transfer on paying my university fee. I had deferred my studies for a year due to a lack of money for paying the fees. We had sold everything that we had, that is, cows and other valuables so that we could raise money for my university fees. There was hence nothing left to sell and we kept on wondering where we were going to get the money so that I could finish my studies. I am under a self-sponsorship program and that is why a lot of money was needed. My husband usually does casual labor to earn a living. He also at times does the business of buying and selling cows. The money that he gets is little and it is only enough for buying food. So when GiveDirectly came up with this program of helping the needy unconditionally, we saw the opportunity for me to finally finish my studies. We were owing to the university KES 57000 but we decided to pay first KES 35000 and use the rest of the money for our household needs. We bought a calf at KES 15000 and maize for our children's consumption with the remaining amount. We decided to buy the calf so that it can help us in the future when it matures. We are thus so much grateful to GiveDirectly for helping us.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
After completing my secondary education in the year 2008, my dream has been to further my education to college level so that I can get academic certificates that can help me seek employment. My husband is a milk vendor and he earns KES 4000 profit every month and all of it is spent on buying food as well as paying our son's school fees. In May last year, I got a letter from Kisii University to pursue a course in Business Information Technology. By that time I had managed to save KES 12000 from my chicken business out of KES 57000 that was required for me to be accepted in school. Thank God my father came through for me as he offered to pay the balance. As we speak, I am supposed to be in school but I do not have KES 43000 that is meant for this term and this is making me sad. Receiving this money will give me ample time in school as it will help me clear this term's school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last year December, my husband sold a cow in order to raise KES 30000 that was required for me to be allowed to sit for my end-year exams. This showed that he cares and it made me very happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Striking a balance between school and marriage life is not easy. I am forced to leave behind 2 young children who I feel are too young to be left under the care of their father. They occasionally fall sick and that means I have to abandon school to come and see them and this is costly on my side. Some family members have even told me to completely leave school and come back home and this has put me in a huge dilemma. I am happy that I have a very supportive husband and in every situation, he has been on my side.
