How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I currently do not have any stable job. I take care of my 3 goats and I want them to grow big and then I sell it at a later date so that I can easily pay my children's college. I am really looking forward to getting a big land where I will be able to go and harvest my crops and sell it at affordable price. The drought has really affected us but I believe when it does rain everything will fall into place. I also want to get myself a dairy cow where I will milk it and sell the milk to my village members so that I can make some money.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has really helped most of my villagers to deal with all the problems that they have. The unconditional transfers have not limited us to what we need to buy but it has helped us think critically and come up with ways that will better our tomorrow.Thank you so much GiveDirectly for filling the gap that we had.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The moment I received my transfers from GiveDirectly, I knew it was time to complete all my pending projects. I took $200 and immediately went to pay my child's tuition who is currently in college pursuing his studies. I am a mother of 8 children and 7 of my children are in elementary school and the other one is in college. At night, the ones in elementary school used to struggle a lot because we had no electricity. They used to study using candles that really affected their performance. I took $100 and installed electricity at home that really made my children happy because they will no longer struggle a lot when it comes to studying. I spent $200 to build my family a spacious kitchen because previously I had a kitchen built of polythene but now I have a nice kitchen, thanks to GiveDirectly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was very excited when I received the first transfer as it was my first time to get hold of such an amount of money. The highest amount I had previously handled was KES 10000. I was preparing dinner for my family at around 8:00 pm when I received the message. I could not hold the excitement. Instead, I burst out into songs as I dance, and this drew my children's attention. That was when I showed them the message, and they too were equally happy.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the ease of paying school fees for my two children, especially clearing this year's arrears for their education. This would not have been easier without the support from GiveDirectly. I felt relieved after clearing the fee arrears.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
KES 20000 of my first transfer facilitated the construction of a kitchen. This included both the construction labor and the building materials (timber, nails, and iron sheets). I have a two-room house which also played the role of a kitchen and store, but I was not happy with the arrangement since the house was squeezed and most of my clothes and other households were stained with the soot produced from the burning firewood. I am glad we now have a separate kitchen which acts as both a store for my farm produce and visitors' sleeping room leaving us with enough space in the main house. One of my sons is in both colleges while the other recently joined grade 9 but raising their fees has been a challenge. I am a single parent who relies on selling milk and the produce from the farm as my only source of income. I do not get enough income from the sources to meet all their needs. At times, I am forced to take the farm produce to school to reduce their fee balance. I, therefore, paid KES 16000 to clear this year's fee arrears. I am relieved of the burden and I can now spend whatever little I earn on other household needs. Having been relying on farming I felt the need to add a heifer for KES 10000 to the ones I had. I am hopeful that once it gives birth then I will have more milk for sale hence improving our household income. The remaining KES 9000 I spent on a few clothes for my children and a bag of corn for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have four children who are at different levels of schooling and as a widow raising their school fees is a challenge. My daughter is in college and her school fees are KES 54,000 per year. My two sons are in high school and theirs is KES 12,000 each. I am a farmer with two dairy cows that produce 12liters of milk every day. I sell this for KES 40 per liter earning me KES 480 per day. This money is not enough to cater for school fees and as we talk I have arrears amounting to KES 20,000. I have been receiving text messages reminding me to clear and this is my main source of stress. Receiving this money will help me clear the outstanding school fees arrears and this will finally give me peace.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In January this year, my daughter joined college to pursue a course in public health. I am happy that she is finally in school because it is the only way to a bright future.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
In the year 2012, I was diagnosed with Tuberculosis disease and I immediately sought treatment. I religiously followed my doctor's advice while taking medication until I was told that I have fully recovered. In 2016, the disease recurred, this time more severe than before. I went back to medication and even though I now feel better my immune system is at its lowest rendering my body weak. I cannot engage in any activity that will change the economic fortunes of my family.
