How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My family depended on the little income I got from casual work to buy food for family consumption. I was able to restock my small business which was pre-existing but was generating very low income due to very little profits as we turned to it from time to time for provision of food for the entire family. When I received the transfer I saw it fit to restock my business so as to boost its profits. This is a major source of income for my family. I can save the little profits I get from the business to pay school fees for my children and even buy food for their consumption.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
They have changed the lives of people in our society. I now own a house. I used the transfer to buy building materials like iron sheets, poles and nails that I used to build a new house as I did have an old one. We can now live in a beautiful and spacious house that can accommodate my large family. They have done nothing wrong that I can think of.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I had an old house that was on the verge of falling. When I received this last transfer, I used it to buy building materials i.e. iron sheets, nails and poles to build a new house. My family now stays in a very big house that can accommodate them comfortably. I also used part of the transfer to buy a mattress and bed as I used to sleep in a mat and I now sleep in a comfortable place. I also used some to restock my existing business to boost the levels of profits which is a major source of income for my family.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Sugar cane takes around 8 months to mature and be ready for the markets. I cannot really say I have started seeing the benefits as it is still soon but, I am positive that in the next six months, my daily life shall have changed a lot with the profits I will be making. My family life will improve too.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
In the village we do not have access to electric power supply, this most of the time forces me to switch off my phone to save on the little-charged battery I have in the night when I do not expect so many calls. It was different on this day, I did not switch it off, I do not have a specific reason why, but on this night my phone was on. At 3.00 am, I heard a message tone ring, apparently, I also found myself awake too on this very night. I had to check, and that is when I noticed GiveDirectly had sent me money. The night seemed so long. I was so happy. I wanted morning to come so that I start spending the money.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I am a sugarcane farmer, and when I received this money, I only thought of expanding it. Now I grow sugar cane in large scale and also targeting large markets. With this, I will be a known sugar cane grower and this means more income for me. This will also reflect in my family's life as they will be able to access atleast most of the basic needs.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means improved farming for my household. I would like to spend the transfer on sugarcane farming. This will increase my source of income that is more sustainable and better than offering casual labor services to other people.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the afternoon when I make some money from the casual labor that I offer and buy some basic needs like food and clothes for my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I am facing in life is unreliable source of income. This has hindered me from sending children to school since I am unable to raise fees needed. It makes me feel unhappy because it is impossible to give them the best inheritance for their future.
